Hi
My 18 month old westie Angus was starting to bite his skin and hind legs and would keep licking and scratch for several minutes. On advice I changed from Butcher's Tripe to cooking my own feed for him. I use AMP minced chicken with a 10mg of garlic added plus carrot, brocalli and peas. This is all "stewed" up. He's been feed on it for 5 days and so far he has stopped his licking / scratching. I also give him a 500mg of evening Primrose oil a day which may also be helping.
He's also joined an agility class which he loves.
Regards
John

hi john
have you thought that it may be his anal glands that were annoying him?they can make a dog a dog bite and chew around the back and legs.i have heard of tinned meat not helping the problem but by cooking your own you helped to ease them????high fibre is a good cure.

Hi Vicki
I had thought of this and he did sometimes strain when he was passing solids. I meant to add that I also put in brown rice for fibre which seems to have helped. I'm just glad he's a hppy little chappie again.
Cheers

Hi Westielover
A big thank you for all the help. The change in diet seems to be working very well and I'd recommend that any owners of a Westie who is having skin problems to try a diet change before taking their dog to the vet.
Cheers
