Topic Dog Boards / Health / Suspected Kennel Cough
- By Claire B [gb] Date 11.09.01 09:40 UTC
I've just been chatting to a colleague who has 2 dogs. She mentioned that one of them has been coughing and/or retching on the odd occassion for the past week, I said it sounded like mild Kennel Cough but her other dog shows no symptoms at all.

Neither dogs are vaccinated against Kennel Cough and she doesn't use the homeopathic vaccine either. The dog showing the signs is fine in herself. The vet is treating the dog for Kennel Cough, has given her a steriod injection and a course of antibiotics. I asked if the dog could have eaten sticks that may have scratched the throat or grass and maybe a grass seed is stuck, she said this was definately possible but when the vet looked down the dogs throat could see nothing but the glands were slightly swollen and although the dogs temperature was normal it was on the high side of normal suggesting possibly an infection.

I said I would ask if any of you guys had heard of only one dog in the same household having Kennel Cough, I find it very unusual as I thought it was extremely contagious. Would appreciate your thoughts so I can pass them on.

Cheers!

Hi Clare

Had the other dog (the one without it now) had kennel cough in the past? we find that it is normally our younger dogs that pick it up, but once they have had it they rarely (although I wouldn't say never) get it again. Last time we had it out of 9 dogs (all living together) the two youngest got it (first timers) and two of the older ones too, but not the others

I have had kennel cough fairly recently (had to miss my pups first show because of it) and the eldest 2 of my 7 dogs did not catch it at all. One dog got it first, it was then about 7 days before any other showed any symptoms at all. All had it extremely mildly and I didn't bother getting any of them treated at all (although I did discuss it with my vet). None had it for more than 2 days.

Just checked and apparently neither of the dogs have had Kennel Cough and the one who doesn't have it is younger than the one that supposedly has it. I would have thought that the younger dog would have shown signs by now but apparently she is fine ? Guess we'll never know but I've passed on your comments anyway, needless to say she's going to try homeopathic kennel cough vaccines. That's what I use as they have been recommended to me by a number of people.

Just as you may have a cold that your partner does not catch so it is with Kennel Cough. Either because of imunity or just that they has better resistance to infection. JH

Just come into work and found that my colleagues younger bitch has come down with Kennel Cough and it's been nearly 5 weeks since her other bitch had the suspected KC which was never confirmed.

She rang the vet rather than taking her in and spoke to the nurse who said her dog has KC again, must be going round and she is giving her dog 1 asprin 3 times per day and 1 spoonful of Benalyn 3 times per day. Said she doesn't like to give her dog steriods unless absolutely necessary.

My colleage has been giving the homeopathic medicine for about 3 weeks now but obviously not working yet. If anyone has other remedies which they have found useful I would be grateful to pass these on. I have no experience of KC at all.

I'm no expert, but one aspirin three times a day seems a lot? Should she recheck this?

Claire, why is she giving three asprin and Benylin? Three does sound alot on top of Benylin. As for Kennel Cough doing the rounds, must be ! Bear has just gone down with it and this is the first time in 10 years that my dogs have had it :-( They will be given Benylin and if, like last time, it hasn't cleared in two weeks, they will then go to the vets for a jab.

I know what you guys mean. I thought giving both sounded a lot but I'm not a vet nurse and you would think they would know !!

However I've passed your comments on to my colleague just now and she's going to stick with just Benalyn and see what happens, one spoonful 3 times per day, does that sound okay to you? I think she's the sort of person that would tend to go straight to the vet and not argue hence why she didn't question the nurse.

How long is KC contagious to other dogs, she takes her dogs to obedience classes and won't be going this week anyway.

Thanks for all you advice.

The benalyn bits sounds fine, we use it if it is only a mild case.

Forgot to say sorry Leigh about your dogs. 10 years without it is pretty damn good though. Just hope my two don't get it, what with Nell having immune problems that would be all she needs. How long would it keep Harris out of the ring, they are both on homeopathic and have been for some time, just hope this is of some help *fingers crossed*

Reefa has immunity problems too Claire. The incubation period is 3-10 days. What I am more ***** off about is the timing... right at the start of the shooting season :-( Im sure he picked it up at B***** Ringcraft too

Very annoying for you Leigh. Is it picked up at Ringcraft and the like because of irresponsible owners or do they honestly not know that their dogs are carrying it because they are not yet showing signs.

Would you not be able to take them shooting because of it being contagious or is it because they are coughing too much.

Hope I don't sound like I'm asking a million and one questions but I know very little about KC and would like to be prepared if the worst happens.
- By Leigh [us] Date 22.10.01 12:13 UTC
Its a viral infection Claire in other words they can pick it up anywhere. I'm guessing that Bear got his at Ringcraft because there was a Ridgeback coughing.
I can't be 100% sure but ......

Because of the incubation period, it is possible that the owner was not aware that her dog had a problem until the clinical signs left no doubt. If you have a dog that pulls on a lead it might take ages before you twigged that there was a problem. I think that once your dogs have had it ..you can recognise a *suspect cough* but by then it is to late.

Apart from the fact that it is highly contagious, it does cause the dogs breathing difficulties and being a deep chested dog...there is no way he could work even if I wanted him too. Most kennel cough is just a pain in the butt but it can turn nasty (pneumonia) so you have to be careful.

Re the Asprin

Many breeds are affected with clotting disorders - asprin is contra-indicated certainly in my own breed in dogs Affected with von Willebrands Disease

I took one of my dogs on a dog walk with my obedience club on the Sunday and she was coughing on the Monday. I think it was a bit too soon to have picked it up on the Sunday so she may well already have had it and passed it on to others on the walk. I was extremely sorry to have passed it on but it was totally unknowingly, once I did realise we had the cough I stopped taking the dogs anywhere and my two puppies missed their first show.

There does seem to be an awful lot of it around this year in every part of the country, although luckily it doesn't seem to be a particularly severe strain (or not the ones I've heard of).

Coming to this a bit late and probably adding nothing ... but to original question. I have taken in many many dogs into my home with kennel cough ... very few other people with rescue a dog that is coughing ... I took the choice that it wasn't fatal and my dogs would only be discomforted by it. Funnily enough though they have never ever had it.

My vet says they are probably immune by all the dogs they have encountered .. I have another theory ... blow me down if you will.

Many of the dogs I have taken in are the most nervous and they usually start coughing when feeling stressed ... my own dogs are totally relaxed about everything ... confident and outgoing ... and never ever catch anything. Not from the kennels or from those in the house.

Incidentally my dogs are not vaccinated either.
