Hello, I am thinking about getting one or two cocker spaniels. I am still at the gathering information stage and wondered if somebody could help me.
1). I have read a few books and all talk about the nice nature of the cocker but two or three people have said this is not the case and that they are "snappy". what do you think?
2). Also does anybody know of any books/websites that give advice about buidling runs and kennels- sizes required etc ?
Thanks for your help

Cockers are renowned for their merry, sociable nature but you must only buy from a reputable breeder. Cockers being one of the more popular breeds are frequently exploited by the puppy farmers & commercial dealers who mass produce puppies to supply the demand for pet puppies - these puppies are frequently sickly & may have poor temperaments due to irresponsible breeding & inadequate socialisation. If you buy a Cocker from a good specialist breeder, then you should have no problems with temperament, although remember that the ultimate temperament of a dog also depends on the care & training it receives with it's new owner. You can find guidance on buying a Cocker puppy here

I note you are also asking about kennelling etc. You may find breeders reluctant to sell you a Cocker puppy if your intention is to kennel him/her outside. Cockers can adapt to kennel life if they have other canine company but generally, they prefer to live in the house as part of the family.

Dear Jane,
thanks for the info.
As regards the kenneling this would be during the day mainly.
Also would I be better getting older dogs or rescue dogs ?
I'll keep researching.
Thanks for the help
Nicola
