Topic Dog Boards / General / Do I tell them?

I know of a couple that have bought what they think is a pedigree
Beagle. They went to Gilford and bought off a man. The dog is now
around 5 months old. The dog has been riddled with fleas and has
had no hair on its body which is being treated by vets.
However this is my question to you all.
They showed him to me as they are concerned
why the owner wont give the K.C.Reg papers to them and it is now
5 months. I took one look at the pup, and its not a beagle. A beagle
cross yes, but the head of a Jack Russell. Not too sure, and I did not want to put my foot in it so to say. I did not tell them.
But afterwards my husband said to me, no wonder they did not
get k.c.reg papers as their dog is a cross breed. I said to him I felt
the same thing as we had gone over a beagle at ring craft many a time
and the head is so distinct. I will be seeing the couples parents in a weeks
time, do I mention it? Problem is they adore the dog and think they have a
pedigree.

Have they any pedigree papers though ?
And have they asked the breeder why they havent recieved kc papers ?

As far as I am aware they were told once they had the k.c.papers they could then get a 3 gen pedigree if they wanted one. But come on!!!5 months ago!!. No way would the K.C not have sent the papers by now.
I have seen Beagles quite often and they have a wonderful head. This dog has a tiny, tiny head like a Jack Russell. But before I start saying your dog is not a pedigree do some lines of Beagles have tiny heads? It just did not look like the Beagles I have seen. I also dont want to upset this couple unless I am totally sure. But I cant see this dog being a Beagle.
It would seem that breeders pass new owners off, It is difficult as only once did I have a litter of pups and the k.c. had not sent the reg forms back in time. I then had to send them on the following week. But I wrote down for each owner all the details so they knew I was on the level. Now the K.C are pretty good at getting the reg. forms back.
I think we must make owners aware of what they are buying. As I have had someone contact me with regards to a Weimaraner they bought in a Blackpool pet shop and they think its wonderful and would like to show it. Now they realise they cant as its under the dog lovers registration scheme.

you may remember from my past posts, the tale of my neighbours at the farm breeding a litter of ecs? Well they are now 16 weeks old & no more pure Ecs than i am!! However, they have papers & unless someone takes it seriously and actually demands dna tests, that is what will continue to happen, whether through ignorance (in my neighbours case) or through dishonesty.

Sam
forgive my ignorance but what are ECs ?
I think if you are new to owning a dog then it is so easy to be "taken for a ride" so to speak . After listening to posts re ; Dog Lovers Registration etc instead of KC .
It is so easy to get a dog and i have said this lots of times .Bad breeders rely on this . If there were more stringent methods on obtaining a pup it would surely make it harder for a bad breeder to sell ?

Yes tell them, and tell them fast. Tell them to lodge a complaint with the kennel club too. Then follow it up. I applied for my pups reg on tues last week and even with a skeleton crew over crufts weekend they appeared on the doorstep this morning. People like this need putting out of business and quickly. A couple in the next village contacted me for advice re a stud dog as their bitch was mainly my breeding. My dogs could walk under this bitch without dropping their heads. She is half whippet, no doubts about it. Cracking little dog, but this "breeder" has none of my stock there, and Im furious.
Then tell them to get onto the trading standards people. If this chap really has provided them with a pedigree, then this can easily be solved by DNA checking. No excuses. Even if stud dog is deceased this can be checke dby comparing DNA profiles of the dogs other progeny or relatives (to a degree).
If they really love the dog as you say, then their feelings toward the dog wont change, but the attitude to the breeder will - although I dont expect hes top of the |Christmas card list anyway now!

I will have to say something as the more I have thought about it, if that was me I would be really upset.
