Topic Dog Boards / Health / Lakeland Legacy or Gravybones?

Hi to all. My 18 month old Bassett, Ozzie has recently returned from a one week holiday on a Lakeland sheep and cattle farm where we rented a cottage. We travelled by car and Oz was predictably car-sick but recovered well and set about scrambling up fells on his short, chunky legs along with my kids and generally had a great time! On an evening he would settle himself in front of the Rayburn and snooze lazily, dreaming of sheep. However he was off his food and even turned his nose up at his fave Bonios. He was eating small amounts of his food (Gilpa mix) and wasn't sick again until the journey home last week. Since then his appetite has returned but this morning there was a dribble of blood in his poo, which is quite runny. The only thing different he has eaten differently (that I know of!) is a few Gravybones. I have been looking through the postings and will be starving him today and I think the best thing would be to put him on rice and fish for the next few days. Does anyone know if Gravybones can cause the runny poo? Incidentally he had a sensitive stomach as a pup and on a few occasions had poo problems with blood and mucous. I'm wondering if maybe he picked up something on the farm but why the blood today after a week of being back?
Any thoughts on this would be most welcome, thanks in advance.

Hi Lorraine,
I occasionally give my dogs gravy bones and have had no problem with them, even my pups chew on them sometimes!
My Dane boy has a dodgy tummy from ill treatment when a puppy (not by me, I hasten to add!) and he will sometimes have this problem, I tend to just feed him chicken and rice and it clears itself up. If you are at all concerned about Ozzie I would suggest you take him to the vet and get it checked out though.

Grace :)

Sorry can't explain why you are having problems but I have discovered that mashed potato is much better and quicker at sorting out a tummy upset than rice. Apparently it is because mashed potato is almost in the digested state and the stomach doesn't have to work very hard and therefore settles down quicker. Obviously you don't put butter and milk in!!

well, thanks for that, I have a big tin of Smash in my cupboard and all the humans in the house hate it, so at last I'll be able to use it up!
