I would be interested in knowing how other people pay their vets, all my dogs are insured fully so I have no worry about fee's or so I thought until today, our vet has changed his policy and now demands full payment when you collect your dog, this is fine if the costs are low but what about if it runs into hundreds like mine did, apparently I have to claim the money back myself off the insurance company after I have paid him. I cant afford to do it like this I havent got hundreds of pounds in my pocket which is why I am insured to begin with, usually we paid him the excess and he claimed his money so we never had to find huge amounts. Is this normal for vets. Its such a shame because he is a good vet but now we will have to change to one that allows us to just pay the excess.

We havent had this yet ..fingers crossed we never do ..but a thought ocurred to me ..you say he demands full payment when you collect your dog ..what happens if you don't have the money?
I would definitely change my Vet if he did this ...one of the reasons I have insurance is to prevent this sort of thing!

Hi,
All of my local vets expect payment in full when you collect the animal, whether your insured or not. I don't know quite what they'd do if you didn't have it all!!! probably keep the animal and charge extra for board.
Debbie

Here we to have to pay in full when we pick up our pet.
Our vet was going to allow us to make payments one time for an op, but we didn't need to after all. It is nice to know that we had that option though. :)

I must be very lucky with my vet as he only expects the minimum until an insurance claim is made and some people I know who were not insured had their dog treated and operated on last November and he waited until after Xmas for the money as they could not afford it right away and he didnt want the dog to suffer or wait until they could afford it ! Another friend of mine also needed an Operation for her rescue dog and he took that in in January and she is paying him in installments with no added interest!

My vets are only to happy to wait until the insurance company pays and anything that is not covered or too small to make a claim just goes on my bill which I can either pay off monthly or pay what ever it is I can afford.
I want to know why is it, a big vets bill always comes in the same time as my car needs a visit to the garage or somthing else breaks down and has to be renewed. I believe some folk call it sods law ! But why does it always happen to me, please tell me I am not alone !!!!!!!

Our old vets used to claim from the insurance company but Pet Plan used to still send the chqs to the owner and it was then up to the owner to hand in the fees to the vets. They stopped doing this because alot of owners were spending the money.
Our new vets expects fees on collection of the animal, however if you are known, have alot of animals or breed they will wait up to 30 days.

I've been with my vet for a long time so they do treat me a little different to some of their other clients ;) However i know they do ask for payment when the animal is collected, but if it is being paid for on insurance then it is paid direct to the vet, and they fill in the forms etc.

We have been with our vet for ages and have 5 dogs with him at the moment, we always used to just give him the insurance claim form and he did the rest, but now we have to pay and claim it back ourselves which we cant afford to do, vet fees are expensive, it cost me £230 yesterday just for 2 dogs to have a blood test which I think was very expensive and to top it all one of the dogs has a very large sore where the vet took the blood from why its gone like this I dont know but the poor little fella is red raw so this means another trip to the vet to get it sorted out. I am looking for another vets practice that will not demand the money as soon as you set foot in the surgery. It seems that some vets have forgotten about the animal care its just 'money money money' to them.
My dogs mean alot to me and I want a vet who I can trust to look after my dogs not just line his pockets.
