Topic Dog Boards / Health / Drugs not suitable for collies?
- By LynnT [de] Date 04.03.03 15:29 UTC
Can anyone help me jog my appalling memory, please? I meant to take a note previously when someone mentioned a particular drug that doesn't go down well with collies, but I forgot. I can't recall whether it was an anaesthetic or something like an anti-inflammatory. As Abby (border collie) has just been prescribed the latter for a possible sprained knee, and is booked in to be spayed at the end of the month, I thought I really should find out:eek:
Thanks.:)

Is this what you were looking for? Believe Ivermectin/Ivomec are also prescribed for skin disorders, but haven't come up against it myself yet.

M.

In certain rare instances Collies have been known to have a sensitivity to certain pharmaceuticals, such as Ivermectin (for Heart Worm control), Imodium A-D, Flagyl and certain anesthetics. Collies especially have been known to have a sensitivity to Ivermectin and in fact the drug insert cautions about usage in Collies and related breeds. If you live in an area prone to Heartworm, please check with your Veterinarian or breeder regarding the advisability of using this drug on any Collie. Deaths have been known to occur and clinical signs of toxicosis have occurred at lower doses of Ivermectin than in other breeds. There have been numerous reports and studies regarding the safety of using ivermectin-based heartworm prevention in collies and other herding breeds of dogs. Please do not use or use with extreme caution any heartworm preventative containing Ivermectin as the active ingredient.

Thanks ever so much. That sounds like it. Abby should be okay with her treatment and anaesthetic then. Phew:) I'll print this off this time!:o

Thanks

Hi Lynn,

Sorry to hear Abby has got a sore knee :( hope she feels better soon. Does she tear around whenever possible too?!! :D

Yes, Nicola, I have the manic variety of bc this time!:D I've always managed the laid-back type before. I've been trying hard not to over-exercise her so she only has five minutes or so off-lead occasionally, then she and Ben go mad playing chase. They actually play hide-and-seek in one of the parks, amongst the long grass. It's really funny to watch, but obviously has its drawbacks as Abby has found out.:(

Jay loves to 'play' chase with the birds in the park ;). Its lovely watching him in full herd mode - but he doesn't like it when I stop him! Luckily he's had no injuries so far (where's some wood to touch?), but has seemed quite indignant after the (planned) loss of his dew claws :D. Hope Abby feels better soon x
