Hi. I have a border collie blue merle bitch. She's 3 year old and I want to know if there are any difficulties breeding blue merles. If there are no significant difficulties where do I find another blue merle dog in the north east?
You must find another colour of BC to mate to your bitch. Mating two blue merle together can be disastrous because of their genetic makeup, you could end up with all sorts of problems with eyes etc.
A tri or black and white dog, would give you a percentage of blue merle puppies.

The breeding of blue merles is not for the inexperienced breeder. It is important that you know exactly what is behind both your girl and the prospective sire and if any are white factored. Maybe the breeder of your bitch should be your first point of contact.
As Lady Dazzle says don't mate merle to merle I know of one such mating ,accidental I may add that produced a deaf pup who also has sight problems and this was considered a ''lucky'' outcome of the mating .It could have been alot worse.Gillian
