I adopted a 2 year old Cocker Spaniel. She has a long tail that is causing her challenges. She has challenges urinating given her tail is continually in her way. She can lift her tail up into a horizontal position. Yet her tail becomes a mess. I have attempted trimming her tail. She also continually bites her tail.

Should I consider having her tail docked?

A cockers tail can only be docked when it is a few days old. What you are looking at now is amputation as a surgical procedure. Unless she is actually injuring her tail by banging it by wagging and/or getting it caught up in undergrowth - then a vet is unlikely to want to perform an amputation when trimming it will suffice.

You say she continually bites her tail - whereabouts on her tail and have you and/or a vet checked to see all is well?

If she is biting the base of her tail, she could possibly need her anal glands emptying.
You should take her along to your vet just for a check over.

in the past I've seen my dogs bite their tails and it was due to fleas ?
