I have been asked for my opinion on Hungarian Vizslas as pets by some friends in France. Family is two adults, with grown up children at University or older. I don't think they will be thinking of working the dog although they are both quite fit and active so it should get plenty of exercise.

It is not a breed I know much about and wondered if any of you gundog people could comment on temperament etc.

Hi Joan, I love em! tend to be a little timid and standoffish to people they dont know but once they make friends! Leigh can possibly tell you more, she's the HPR specialist.

Regards, John

not on topic, but I had a mental picture of Leigh as a he! I have met Viszlas and thought them a little more laid back than GSPs, the pups I have met have been chrmers, and the adults a little diffident but not nervous!

You certainly got that wrong then Barbara! :)

I'm biased I know, because I have two Vizsla girls who we love to bits. Mine fit perfectly into our family life. They're very affectionate (oversized lap dogs I would say), they get along great with my kids and I don't find them "hyper" either.
The coat is what I would call "low maintenance" - a good regular brush with the rubber mitt is enough to keep them tidy.
Mine get along well with other dogs (although Scarlet has developed a dislike of GSDs and boxer dogs through previous bad experience - she is very unforgiving if something has upset her). Advice given by the Vizsla Society says that they are a breed which doesn't respond well at all to harsh discipline...and I can understand this because I find my Vizslas are very sensitive souls.
I'm very happy to have Vizslas as part of our family - I think they're great!:)

Thanks to everyone for their input, they sound ideal.

I must have met yours then, lol!! Seriously we get our opinion of a breed from the indivuduals that we meet. If we meet nice ones leaves us with a positive image, but if they are horid can spoil the reputation in that persons view. I met someone at a show who had met a dog aggresive Elkhound, who attacked her Whippet with its colie cross companion, she was very wary of my easy going one, though she unbent eventually!

Thanx Brainless. I can assure you that I am all woman ;-) Leigh
