OK this may of been asked before but I am a novice owner witrh a newish pup!

We were under the opinion male dogs did not make the grass go brown when they went to wee!! unlike a bitch. Our boy is 4 months old and squatting and we wondered if that is the reason why.

We have been told of a product you can buy from pet shops to give to your dog which alters the urine and so does not cause this in the grass.

2 questions!

1. will this stop when he stops squatting ?
2. Would it be safe to give him a product designed to alter the urine without causing other problems for him?
3. Has anyone heard of it or used it ??

this was my very first question on c/d-All those moons ago !!:D
I was told either
a) Wash down liberally wth water after the event
b)add apple cider vinegar to the drinking water
c)add tinned tomatoes to the dogs food
I was also told that it may stop 'burning' after the dog matures ,so as alot of this has coincided with winter I'm afraid I can't tell you what works
I do Add the cider vinegar ( when i remember )so I'm afraid I'll have to wait till the end of summer to see what is scorched and what is not

Yes, the brown patches will stop when he starts leg-cocking - but what he cocks onto will go brown instead ;). The brown patches on the lawn will go green again if you leave them alone - in fact they'll probably go even greener than the rest. I wouldn't care to try to alter the chemical composition of the urine in case it caused the dog problems - but then I own dalmatians who as a breed can be prone to urinary problems.

Like i say his maturing has coincided with winter so this will be the telling time but all our shrubs are burnt as high as the leg cocking goes so we'll wait and see

I am not overally worried about it as although I am a keen gardener it is a small sacrifice to pay for the fun of the boy!!Hubby only started taking an interest in "sorting" our garden out last year and it is he who is getting neurotic over the brown patches! swears he can count at least 12!! funny I only count 3 !
I did wonder about leaving it to sort out in the spring when it starts to grow.
I am definitely not happy about adding hemicals to him without knowing how else they could affect him.

mmm the height he cocks his leg could cause tall brown stains! well he is growing fast & tall and this could mean a lot of lost shrubs as well then!!

What you could do Jude is sew some grass seed into little containers, dig out the brown patches and then replant the new grass. If you always have some on the go your lawn need never look an unsightly mess.

I have some camomile I started last summer which I planned to use to edge our deck with I shall do some normal grass the same way!

We have bitches and in the dry summer months, lol, our garden is full of small brown circles of dead grass. If we have lots of rain there are very few of them. If I am outside and I'm quick enough i throw a bucket of water over the wee, this does help. But through the winter it always grows back and right now there is not a single brown patch at all. I was always under the impression it was only bitches wee that caused brown patches, but only because this is what I was told. Don't know of any solutions though, we just put up with it.
