Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / Breeding query

I have a black Labrador bitch and was considering mating her with a yellow dog.
Recently I read, possibly on your boards, that one should never mate a chocolate with a yellow. Now, my black bitch carries a chocolate gene - her dam is chocolate, as is the dam's mother.
Also, would you advise on breeding with a bitch whose hips are 8:8 , (her eyes are clear), the proposed yellow dogs' are 4:5 .
I just want to be absolutely sure, but I need to know very soon as she's already on day 11 of her cycle!
I look forward to hearing your advice,

regards,

Hi Stefanie, I think John would be your man to best answer this one. However I started showing in Labs Many years ago, at that time Chocolate was relatively unusual, I'm talking 1970. The quality of the colour was not very good, and I believe it was for that reason that it was advisable to breed Chocolate to Black, the Black would have to carry the Choc gene to provide Choc pups. Have I remembered that right John?
