Came home from an hours shopping yesterday to find my 11 week old puppy had gone into a duffle bag on the floor(one I could have sworn was zipped up) and got out a bottle of liquid black shoe polish.
Which she then proceeded to pirce, then carry round the room (light terracoota carpet!!!!!!!!!) dripping black shoe polish as she went. Then she walked through the puddles and trod littel black footprints through the rest of the house.
I realsie its my fault for leaving the bag on the floor and am not overly concerned about the carpets (although I had to hide her from my fiancee who was ready to kill her.) but should I be concerned about her.
I immediately checked in her mouth and there was no sign of any polish (i had horrible visions of a black mouth and tounge) and the amount on the carpet makes me think she cant have swallowed that much but should I take her to the vets and have her checked out anyway??????????????
My fiancee says I'm too protective of her but I think he's just still angry with her so I'm not listening to him

If her mouth and fur around her mouth wasn't covered with shoe polish the chances are she did not swallow any, or at least not enough to cause her any harm.
My pup got into our fireplace, twice. And here's the best part, my husband was watching her -- eyeballs fixed right on her -- both times! Second time he said, "I didn't think she would do it, I told her no." Black soot all over the pup and light beige carpets. Oh well, the carpets needed professional cleaning anyway.
Best advice I can give you is to buy a dog crate and use it. That way you do not have to worry about the puppy when you are out for a couple of hours.

we do have a crate already but she's in it all night and so I feel incredibly guilty putting her in it during the day.
I actually had a day off work yesterday and am normally at work with her having a dog walker twice a day so think it would be too much time crated.

I aree with you Rachel - I don't crate my boys during the day - but when they were very young and likely to get into trouble - I did use a puppy pen which is bigger than a crate and gives them room to have sleep play and toilet areas - all depending on the breed of dog of course.
You do find you learn when you have a puppy to check that you have left nothing about as they can and will get into anything they can. At this age they are so inquisitive and you have had a fairly lucky escape here. Do you have a room where you could section of a part of it for her?

no not really.
I cant section the kitchen off because I have 2 cats who have to come in and out of the house via the kitchen
and being the worlds best escape artist she's managed to foil all of my plans to keep her in while still letting the cats out.
I'll just have to learn my lesson and keep everything off the floor.
Luckily she's been quite well behaved with things like the furniture
