Topic Dog Boards / Health / Bloody discharge??
- By taffyparker [gb] Date 09.02.03 16:07 UTC
Hope someone can reassure me, it's typical that this occurrs on a Sunday! Whilst out this morning Taiko strained, nothing came out apart from a jelly/slimey clot of what looked like blood. He seems fit and well. His nose is hot. He hasn't had any number two's although he marked his spots as normal. His stools were healthy enough yesterday, he was abit loose at thestart of the week. Should I just keep a close eye on him or do you think I should ring the vet on the out of hours number?
Thanks in advance,
Julie

Julie

It can be a difficult call one such as this. Has he eaten anything dodgy - ie something like a cooked bone, toy etc that could cause him some internal damage? I would be inclined to keep a close eye on him today and see if does manage to pass a normal stool. If not or he does the same again or you see any deterioration in his general health - I'd call the vets. If everything passes and all seems well - then perhaps a phone call to the vets tomorrow just to put your mind at rest could be in order.

Do let us know how he goes - it can be such a worry.

Thanks Pam :) I haven't seen him eat anything he shouldn't, but being a mal it's very possible. He had the run of downstairs for the first time last night and again when we went shopping. There was no visible evidence that he'd been up to something he shouldn't. He has been eating bulbs in the garden which he is terrible for. He usually has terrible gas, but all's been quiet for the last two days. If he doesn't 'go' on his evening walk, I'll know something is amiss and spend the night downstairs with him. I'll let you know how he goes (no pun intended!)Julie

Guess I really shouldn't post this since I don't know for certain, but I thought all bulbs were considered poisinous to dogs.

Hi Julie, I would be concerned that he has been eating bulbs. Heres the site for toxic plants. Some bulbs are on it love. poisonplants Hope he is okay. Shirl

Thanks Shirl. I've saved the link to favourites for future reference. There was a huge holly tree/bush which we couldn't dig out as the previous owner had let it take root in an awkward spot. A gardener came and sawed the bulk of it off and was going to come back to try to remove the stump at a time of year when it'd be more appropriate to trim back the other trees/bushes. Taiko has been digging in this vicinity so the holly could well be it. The bulbs he digs up are bluebells, we were told these are now protected and you're not supposed to dig them up?????I'll confess to being confused by that one. As I'm not a gardening fanatic between Taiko and hubby the garden is in ruins anyway and I did remove alot of bulbs last year, but the previous owner created lovely gardens and the bulbs are everywhere.
More importantly Taiko has passed two healthy motions today and still seems to be in fine cat chasing form. I'll continue to watch him closely but suspect it may well be one of those things, a one off that you can't explain! As long as he's looking fit and well I'll assume the immediate panic is over for the time being.Thankyou all for your help :)

So glad that he is doing okay now. I don't know anything about bluebells being protected either. Glad the web site helped. Shirl :D

Panic back...more blood in this mornings doings :( Have phoned vets and made appointment this afternoon. Have kept the suspect motion in a tupperware tub, will present it to vet along with one of the bulbs and see what he thinks. He still seems fit and well, I can't honestly say if I'm imagining other symptoms because I'm looking to hard.
Julie :(
