Normally the owner of the bitch pays a stud fee. This is purely for the mating, and is no guarantee of pups. However, if the bitch does "miss", it is normal practice for the Stud Dog Owner (SDO) to offer a repeat meting next season free of charge. After the stud fee is paid, all expenses are the responsibility of the owner of the bitch, as is finding homes for the puppies (though responsible STOs will do all they can to help) and all medical treatment pups may need. It's an expensive business....it's best to have about £1000 available in the 18-week period between mating and homing the pups.

Also there will be the cost of getting her heart tested, and eye tested by specialists. The £1000 is not a generaous estimate of what it will cost, especially ifyou add in extra bedding, Whelping box, puppy accomodation, puppy pens etc. Hip Scoring is not done universally, but should be as Cavaliers have been scored with very high hip scores, and checking for slipping Patellas is also needed!

Theres so much more to breeding that the basic costs. There is so many hidden cots you will 100% concur that you never thought of. It best to start saving if you want to have a litter. Honest!!! :)
