Topic Dog Boards / Health / How can U promote hair growth?
- By Boxacrazy [gb] Date 04.09.01 05:43 UTC
Hi,
May seem like a really stupid question, so apologies in advance.
My Boxer bitch has 8 week old pups which she stopped 'feeding'
when they were 6 weeks.
Up to this point her coat was in wonderful condition and she hadn't
dropped any coat. After she stopped feeding them her coat started
to fall out. She has been on a course of antibiotics as we caught the start
of mastitis for the past week, but other than this she is fit & well.
How can I help the re-growth of her coat?
She is fed a complete dog food (Arden Grange Prestige).
As I am going to Richmond this friday, I thought it was worth asking
as I am going 'shopping' for my pup that I am keeping. So another thing
added to the shopping list isn't going to make too much difference!!
Thanks In Advance
Kirstine

There are products on the market, one call Restore comes to mind. But I think that good food along with daily exercise and brushing with a quality brush is about all you can do. JH

I agree with JH - lots of brushing to get rid of the old coat - I don't know if this stimulates the new growth but it does make you feel as if you are doing something.

If you have damp fingers (or one of those pink or purple rubbery/plasticy grooming things) this also gives a good massage to the dog as well.

Thanks Christine,
I am already brushing her coat out and I am using the
rubber mitt.
I just wondered if there was anything else I should be doing.
Thanks again for your help.

Thanks Jackie.
It's nice to know that there are people willing
to give sensible advice on this board.

The following is reputed to work, although I have never tried it myself!
Hopefully Sierra can give a translation/equivalent for 'Lavitamin/lixatonic' and 'diaglo/mirracoat'.
Congratulations on your litter, and good luck :)

Growing Hair on a Doorknob

courtesy of Judith Suhr

1 lb. Peanut Butter
1 lb. honey
1 lb. diaglo (powder) or Mirra coat
1 pt. Lavitamin also known as lixatonic

Have peanut butter at room temperature. Mix all ingredients together This will be very thick and sticky. Stores indefinitely in refrigerator. Make into balls according to size of the dog.

Small dogs should get 1-3 teaspoons daily,
Large dogs should get 1-2 tablespoons daily.

Guaranteed to grow hair-- even on doorknobs. If you can get the doorknobs to eat and digest this--it will grow hair!

Trying it on my husband tomorrow - will let you know if my Phil Mitchell turns into Kurt Russell (well I can dream can't I?!)

Thanks Debs,
Much appreciated.
I know that Bob Grass's SkinCure is also supposed to be able to
grow hair on 'billiard balls'. It really smells strong, something after my own
Granddad's heart, he loved universal embrocation. Which was wonderful stuff
especially for bruising on humans.
Thanks Again

Hi Kirstine,
This one you *feed* to the bitch (might get a bit sticky if you rub it on..LOL) ;)

Of course dropping coat happens a lot after whelping, so I wouldnt be unduly concerned, as long as she has the correct diet.

Not sure why people should be anti sharing info - they certainly arent here, so you have come to the right place :)

I have a cracking recipe for (canine!) weight gain if anyones interested - very useful for dogs who have dropped weight for any reason.

My second youngest bitch has always been a bit of an anorexic, so I would love to know what you do! I have foundthat just ignoring her and taking the food up has worked in the main, though she still gets days when she won't eat, and is always lean and wiry. she has never carried a heavy coat (I think this is part ly the non eating). Also Evening Primrose Oil helps with coat, and I have always found Brewers yeast supplementation seems to get the moult over with quickly and get new coat in, though could be coincidence!

Here is one of the recommendations for weight gain supplementation.
The person who sent it to me gives two of these 'balls' per meal to her dogs (Sibes).
I cant find the other recipe atm, will have a rummage later...if you think this one sounds yeuch, you aint seen nuttin yet ;)

It should be noted, that it is best to ensure there is no *clinical* cause for weight loss - if in doubt consult your vet (I am sure *you* do, but I thought I better mention it anyway!)

Weight Gain Supplementation.

10lbs cheap (fatty) Minced Beef
10oz rolled oats
6 egg yolks
10oz wheat germ
10oz Dark Molasses

Mix thoroughly and form into meatballs. Freezes well.

You did realise that dropping coat just after weaning is normal, in my breed that has a thick double coat, they can look horendous! They seems to loose just about every hair on their body, well seems that way! Boxers are shorcoated by comparison, but must go through the same hormonal changes causing this heavy moult.
- By Boxacrazy [gb] Date 05.09.01 05:51 UTC
Yes Brainless,
I did realise that coat loss was completely normal and
hormonal (I have read the book of the bitch, that was my
bible throughout my bitches pregnancy and whelping etc)
But I was wondering if there was anything else I could be
doing to help promote her coat re-growth.
As I know that there are a lot of experienced people out
there I thought it was worth asking the question.
As once the experienced people have gone it's down to us
to look after the 'new' people. I know that some people do not like
sharing their 'trade secrets' but to those that do THANKYOU.
As without you this message board wouldn't be what it is today.

I find my very dog eared (I lent it to someone and the back cover got chewed!) copy of the Book of the Bitch really helpful, I also get on well with the Arden Grange, so you should have no trouble with getting her coat back, my friends dobes coats improved on it.

I use "restore" from Stock Nutrition after a bitch has welped, it help the coat grow back in quite quickly, I too had a bitch that went "baldy" after a litter, I use Restore all the time just a teaspoon in with the food and my dogs have good coats.

My suggestion is evening primrose oil - good for skin & coat
I use Holland & Barrett capsules for my hounds

Hi,
I have a 6 mth old Akita show dog, n my stupid vet shaved part of her front leg, we have a show in 6weeks, how long will it take the hair to regrow?? Is there anything I can do to encourage / speed up the regrowth??

Thanks
Nala

Nothing will speed it up but a judge should take no notice of it at all.

I wouldn't worry.  I took my girl on Saturday to a show, she has a cording woolly coat and has one of her legs clipped off too after having blood tests taken for her progesterone levels.
- By Reikiangel [gb] Date 02.01.12 18:02 UTC
Someone told me they got some shampoo from the vet, don't know what its called though.  It grew the hair back on a staffie.  My old girl has a big bald patch as well so thought of trying it.
- By Boxacrazy [gb] Date 02.01.12 19:00 UTC
This brought a smile to my face, as my post was about a dam who I've now lost sadly
and that pup that I kept is now a veteran aged 10 years and 6 months old.

:)

Hope your akita's hair grows back soon
- By Reikiangel [gb] Date 03.01.12 09:16 UTC
I never noticed the date.  However was it found x

I only saw the Akita part, never thought to scroll up.
