I am the very proud owner of an 11 month rough collie who has been an absolute pleasure so far. Generally obedient in most respects, however, in recent weeks he has become quite protective, especially if I am out alone with him in the evenings. I would like some advice regaring how to quieten him down as when he suspects a threat, eg someone walking behind us, or a fox in the garden, he goes off like a siren and it is quite terrifying for the innocent person who is just walking along.
He only does it for a perceived threat, mostly to men we come across on our walks thro' woods and whilst I am keen for him to make me aware I would like to be able to find the off switch, also.
I don't shout at him to be quiet, have tried treats, any advice

oddly enough I have just got back from my vets and they had a sign there asking if you have a problem with dogs barking then speak to the nurse regarding renting an Abistop or similar thing! As a novice owner I am not up to speed with what this is and as yet Monty has not started barking too much !
the fact they rent them suggests a) they are expensive! but b) it is curable fairly quickly!
Maybe others will have better advice/experience with what this is !
