HI
My 5 month old Basset pup occasionally vomits white foamy bile. He initially did it 3 or 4 times over a 2 day period just after Xmas so we took him straight to the vets who gave him a jab and put him on a diet of chicken and rice for the next 48hrs. This seemed to do the trick and we put it down to overexcitement with Xmas! However last weekend he vomited once and then was fine and then again this morning he vomited once and is fine? He has no other symptons and he never actually brings up food. Is this something I should worry about or is it just a normal puppy thing?

Doesn't sound very normal. I would take him back to the vet and ask them to check him out again. Our puppy occasionally vomited because he had eaten too fast (they don't always know at that age), but it was never foamy bile, and there was always food in it. You may want to make sure that he hasn't swallowed something he wasn't supposed to.

Okay thanks, I'll take him back to the vets and get it checked out. He is a real hoover, even though I watch him like a hawk he may well have picked something up that he shouldn't. Thanks again for replying.

Some dogs seem to do this when their stomache is empty - try breaking his daily intake down into more smaller meals.....

Hi Digger
The last two times that he's been sick have been first thing in the morning when he would have an empty tum so that could have something to do with it. I'll still take him to the vets and make sure it's nothing more serious tho. If they can't come up with anything I'll try putting him back on 4 smaller meals a day and see if that helps. Thanks.
This is exactly what was happening with my dog when she was a pup - first thing in the morning throwing up foamy bile. The recommendation of the vet was to ensure that she actually eats at least twice a day (first thing in the morning and last thing at night). So when she was a puppy I made sure she had a little meal about 10pm. Now they get fed twice a day 7am and 7pm and thats fine. (they have dry food available all day so they can eat 'little and often'. They get topped up with a bit of tinned on top in morning and evening.) This works for us as mine don't overindulge. They get their daily ration available all day and they eat when the need.
If you've a dog who overindulges split the daily allowance into 2 to 3 smaller meals and ensure that he never has an empty tum

Hi all, depending on the age of pup/youngster they should be having between 3/5 meals a day till up to around 9mths of age I think.

Hi Tmouse, same thing happened to one of my dogs & vet did same as yours. Short while later she started vomiting bile again, vet said keep her on chicken & rice for a wk. Few days later she started vomiting bile again so this time vet took her in & gave her an endoscopy & found a peice of plastic stuck in her tummy. Take her back to the vets cos he could have swollowed something or maybe his foods not suiting him.
