We are planning on getting a new puppy at the end of June & are planning to go camping at the end of august. I have seen conflicting information about at what age puppies should have their vaccines & how long after the 2nd one before they could go out. Do you think it would be OK to take our puppy away with us at 12 weeks after her 2nd vaccine or are we going to have to pospone our trip?
Thanks in advance for your advice

Our puppy is having her jabs at 8wks and 10wks and will be able to walk around in public at 12wks. Your best bet would be to talk to your local vets to see what regime they use.

Pup can have first injection at 8 weeks and the 2nd injection we were told could be any time between 2-4 weeks ( no earlier and no later respectively) . After the second injection depending on the one vet gives him/her pup can go out after 7 days so you could in theory take pup out at 11 weeks if all goes to plan .
We also made sure pup had kennel cough innoculation before we took him out as well ( something to bear in mind if where you are going will have other dogs around ) and he wont be able to go out until another 7-10 days if you opt for this . We made the decision to get the kc innoculation ( a spray up the nose) as there was a case of k c going around in the area and you can never be too sure .
Anyway good luck and i hope all goes to plan :)

Hi H, the time of when pups are vaccinated & when they can go out after the course of vacc. is dependent on the the manufacturer of the vaccine & the protocol issued by them. They all vary slightly but vets are issued with the protocol & are duty bound to follow them & also to give you those instructions. Your best bet is to ask you vet what vacc`s they use & what are the instuctions on the data information sheet.

Just adding to that - isnt there a new vaccine which has the first and second jabs rolled into one ?
Maybe someone else can add to this ?

My maths makes your puppy about 16 weeks old at the end of August. If this is the case and you started the vaccination programme within the first week of owning the puppy then theoretically you would be able to take your puppy camping with you. However, the reality of a 16 week old, not yet house-trained puppy, in a strange environment without your normal routine is a different matter. You may find it rather limiting to have such a dependent creature with you on your Summer holiday, and it is probably not very fair on the puppy either. It is not something I would advise, sorry.

If the puppy would still be only 12 weeks old, then it would probably still need to be quarantined from the big wide World, IMO it would definitely be too young to go camping, and what's more it would have been separated from the litter too young (at 4 weeks old!!!). I do hope this is not what you meant.

Please think of the practicalities very carefully before making a decision on this. There is a big difference between taking your puppy out into the World and dragging it around on your Summer holidays with you.
