Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / Fretting when alone/at night

I have a 7 month old Yorkie. We got her from a rescue centre at 11weeks. From
day one she had not like being left or alone at night. She has a cage for nights
and when we're out (she's never left long). Problem we have is she will go
to bed in her cage (downstairs) but will wake up between 4 and 5.30am every
morning. It's still dark and to be sure we've put up a blackout blind. She will
bark until we get up - this could be anytime from 6am - 8am. We've spoken to
people via the web and the vets and they've suggested to leave her when she
wakes and she'll eventually get the msg that no-one will come until we're ready.
This just doesn't work. One morning I relented and came and slept on the sofa,
she was as quiet as a mouse. Next morning - she reverted to same routine. We
have been without a full nights sleep for months and are getting desperate. So
we have taken her cage upstairs to our room - something I said I'd never do, and
for the last two nights she has slept until we wake. Can anyone help with this
situation, as I would like to eventually get her back downstairs. I have heard of
a drug - via Vets, that can help with the seperation anxiety - which I'm assuming
this is. Thanks for reading - Carol

sounds like the yorkie is winning!!!!
I think you have to take the bull by the horns and either grit your teeth & continue ignoring it until she finally gives up, (no more one night relapses, you must be constant.)
Or, give up, accept she will sleep in your bedroom & call it a daY!
One other thought, how about a clock radio downstairs that comes on automatically at about the time she usually starts barking? It might just be enough for her?

Why do you not want her to stay in your bedroom at night. My dog sleeps in his cage at night, always has, and is fine. Years ago we had a Rotti pup which started off downstairs but wouldn't settle and just made so much noise that Mum & Dad kept her in their bedroom. Ever since then all our puppies have started off in the bedroom & still do sleep with us (2 in my room & 2 in my parents room). The other 2 have the run of the hall, kitchen & upstairs landing but usually don't bother coming upstairs.
