Our 13 month old had a lump appear fairly suddenly on the top of her head, about the size of an apricot and seemed full of fluid. Took her to vets who said it was probably just a bump. He aspirated a tiny amount of bloody fluid and gave her anti biotics. Said it should go down in a few days. Next morning it was much the same but the suddenly in the afternoon it disappeared as quickly as it came. However today it is back again. I am mystified. Any suggestions?

Well if it was on your hand I would say hit it hard with a book, my GSP had one come up suddenly on his head just behind the ear one Saturday night, I was going to take him into the vet on Monday and it just as quickly disappeared that day, someone is going to tell me the proper name for them but they are normally just fluid filled lumps that burst if hit, & the fluid is absorbed by the body. which is probably what happened with him charging around during a walk. Our pointer Lucky had one on her neck which got bigger and bigger. It made her feel quite poorly as well. Took her to the vets, put her on ab's and the lump went down very quickly.

Ingrid, could you be talking about ganglions (not sure if thats how you spell it).
My mother has one on her hand and it's been suggested she hit it with a very heavy book, although it's in too difficult a position, so she's waiting for an op. I think a ganglion is calcification on the bone. Don't quote me on that though.
If this was my dog i think i'd probably go back to the vets again, unless of course you haven't finished the antibiotics.I'm sorry i've no experience, apart from my mothers, of this sort of thing. However i've got plenty of experience of warts and fatty lumps. But thats no good to you, sorry.

I had one on my wrist - it was hard though. I whacked it with a book, it hurt, a lot, then went!
I wouldn't hit my dog with a book though, he's a Great Dane and he'd flatten me!! :)

Ours is a GSP too. I trained as a nurse and I don't think its a ganglion. Trauma is most likely but I was puzzled why it went and came back. If it does not subside she is due back to vets at end of week (After antibiotics)

My friends GSD had one on its hock. It kept recurring for a few weeks before it went away for good. That was caused by trauma and kept coming back because the dog kept knocking it again. Is there something your pup could be banging her head on like a crate or table etc...?

We do have a ddog of similar age and they are always playing. It could be that. It is still there but marginally smaller this morning

Callum has had one on his head since he was a puppy and it is still there, it seems to have the hair growing in to it and if you squeeze it, some thick brown gunk comes out but that doesnt happen all the time only when it builds up, i usually pull the hair out of it, the vet said they would take it off but it isnt causing any problem so it is staying there, just makes him look like he has a bigger pointy head because it sits right on top of where the bone is.

UPDATE
I went back to the vets today as the lumpis as big as ever. He drained some fluid off for cytology, about 10mls and there was still some left. He does not think it to be trauma but a 'cystic type' lesion. He did say tho that cytology may not show anything conclusive. If it does that will affect what happens next. She is fine in herself ,just hope we get her sorted for Crufts.

Cytology not back as yet. The lump was smaller yesterday, probably due to it being aspirated but it is as bad as ever today. It is sitting on the top of her occiput and is the size of a small egg. Also the bridge of her nose (at the stop) has swollen but I don't know if this is connected as she does play pretty hard with our other youngster. It could be coincidence but i am starting to worry more. She looks so odd but is not worried by it.

Hello---I just came across this---my Amstaff has the same thing going on in the exact same spot---was there anything conclusive discovered about your dog?
