Hi,
Ive had 2 absolutely wonderful dogs from the pound in my adult life, both resemble the flat coat retriever remarkably. I am wondering if this (as yet unpopular in the U.S) breed has any conscientious breeders in the U.S..
I have a friend who bred shetlands for a long time to bring back the lovable nature that had been bred out for the sake of show.
I would like to find a breeder who takes the interest of the animals behavior into consideration more than its 'champion' blood line.
I am looking for a 'pet' not necessarrily a working field dog,and have found the bird dogs to be some of the most sociable with children.
This is a major factor in my selection as I have many nieces and nephews.
The dogs I have had which resemble the flat coat retriever have been fabulous in all respects, despite the skin and ear trouble.
Any help or comments would be appreciated.

Hi,
First you should contact the AKC (American Kennel Club) for the names and contact numbers for the secretaries of the various Flatcoated Retriever Associations and Clubs in the USA. The secretaries can advise you and would be delighted if you joined them at field and show events. This will give you a better idea about the breed and it's charactoristics. All responsible breeders of the flatcoat will be more than willing to help you find a suitable pup.
Flatcoats are good with children, all my dogs have been great with my kids and with my grandson.
