We've had our rescue dog (a two year old collie/german shepherd cross) for about a fortnight and he's settling in well. However although he was toilet trained (we thought!) he's developed a habit of using any bit of carpet he can get near. He is fine during the night but will go inside the house during the day/evening, even when we're here. We were prepared for outdoor scooping but not on the hall carpet! Perhaps a silly question but is it usual for a dog to need to go 5 or 6 times a day and can anyone give tips on house training a older dog?

What I would do is go back to training him like you would with a puppy ie. going to the garden with him and waiting untill he has done his bussiness then offering a reward.
Look on one of the threads about toilet training do not be put off with thinking that this is only for puppys:)
If you join the group I am sure that any more questions you have can be answered by people who have had rescue dogs.
