Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / Puppy Possibly Depressed?
- By dbenson [us] Date 24.01.03 15:15 UTC
Hi,

My mother just recently got a Yorkie, and he is now around 10 weeks old. She has been away since Tuesday morning, leaving me to care for the puppy. Just last night, he seemed constipated, and has been throwing up a lot. He will not eat or drink right now. Is it possible that he is depressed because she is away? Or could he just be sick? His diet includes Puppy Science Diet, and thats all he eats.

Thanks

Your puppy sounds sick, not depressed.

Please take him to the vet as soon as possible. If he is throwing up and is constipated he may have swallowed something which is causing a blockage in his intestines, which is a very serious problem that needs to be checked out quickly. Or, he may have picked up a puppy bug, which in a pup so young can also become serious very quickly.

Good luck with the puppy and hope he is better by time your mother gets back.

Well all he eats though is his Science Diet puppy food, and occasionally some small puppy dog biscuits. I watch him all the time, and when I am not watching him, he is in a little pen. I just checked on him and he pooped, but its just his attitude right now. He is really tired, and wont recognize me at all. Its quite sad really =(

When dogs are unwell they often come across as depressed.

I'd call the vet and get the pup down there as soon as possible.

Please take the advice given and taken him to the vet. He cannot help himself and you must make sure he is not ill - your vet is the only one who can help him if he is ill so better to be safe than sorry.

I agree your puppy does sound ill.

Puppies tend to get on and excited by anyone. The fact that he isn't taking on fluid or food sounds like he may be unwell. Call the vets ASAP and get him seen. Better to be safe than sorry...

Best wishes,
Claire

Ok. Took him to the vet. He had stomach problems which caused a large 'poopball' to form, and block the colon/rectum area. He is all better now, but a little tired from the trip to the vet's.

Thanks to everyone who helped

=)

Great, glad to hear your mum's pup is better!

Did the vet perhaps tell you that the hair around a Yorkie's anus needs to be kept trimmed short? If it isn't, it can actually cause a problem similar to the one you mentioned.
