Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / why did she reject the male?
- By ladypickles [gb] Date 24.01.03 13:19 UTC
my three year old toy yorkshire terrier bitch was put to the male on 22 jan after we had both dogs checked at the vets and took her advice as to whether to breed them. she couldnt see any reason why we shouldnt and gave us the green light and said she would be at the end of the phone should we need her. off we went a little excited a little nervous to wait. having spent the last two years reading and talking to breeders we thought we were prepared and as we expected things got off to a flying start however they didnt tie as we had expected. we took sophie home and phoned the vet and asked what next? she advised us to try again two days later (today) we did but she growlled as he approached although her tail was still flicking to the side needless to say we are a little confused as im sure the male is. does anyone know why she reacted like this?

If its her first time she may be unsure, u can hold her and let the male mount. Maybe she is not ready yet, or no longer ready to stand.
I'm sure someone will come along soon with more helpful advice.
ttfn :)

Could be you got the timing wrong or she did not like him.

when we put her to the male (jaz) she was all over him like a rash and allowed him to mount her even though they never tied he didnt tie with the other bitches hes met but still fatherd puppies, so is it necessary to tie ? .having checked her dates shes spot on time perhaps she just had a headache!! she still flicks her tail to the side but why? she even bit the snout of my jack russell this morning and hes no threat hes been doctored

thank you i am lost as what to do next, i have read that you can buy ovulation kits for dogs as you can a woman but it poses the question why can you not buy a pregnancy test for a dog? i feel that we all work in realitivly the same way so it cant be that hard its just checking the hormones in the urine

There is no need for a tie, though its preferable, as long as he delivered "the goods" the chances are she will be pregnant. If she was willing and happy she was probably dead right the first time and had "gone over" the second time. Fingers crossed. :-)

THANKS FOR YOUR REPLY IT HAS MADE ME FEEL A LITTLE BETTER. IM NOT SURE IF SHE HAS CONCIEVED OR NOT AND WONT KNOW FOR A FEW WEEKS YET HOWEVER HER BEHAVIOR HAS CHANGED IN THE LAST 48 HOURS SHE REFUSED TO COME DOWN STAIRS OFF MY BED ALL DAY YESTERDAY AND THIS MORNING WAS THE SAME. SHE WAS ALSO MORE AFFECTIONATE YESTERDAY AND TODAY JUST WANTING TO BE HELD WHICH I DONT MIND SHE JUST SEEMS TIRED SO IVE MOVED HER FOOD AND WATER UPSTAIRS AND BRING HER DOWN TO THE GARDEN EVERY FEW HOURS. MY JACK RUSSELL WHO IS NORMALLY QUITE ACTIVE HAS BEEN AT HER SIDE THROUGHOUT TAKING HER TITBITS OF FOOD NOW AND THEN SO WHO KNOWS SHE MIGHT BE PREGNANT. IF SHES ANYTHING LIKE ME WHEN I WAS PREGNANT WITH ALL THREE OF MY CHILDREN THEN SHE WILL BE TIRED AND RATTY THROUGHOUT THEN RELIEVED WHEN ITS ALL OVER. IS THERE ANYTHING I SHOULD DO FOR HER?

If you haven't got it buy "The Book of The Bitch" by Kay White and Jim Evans. Its the dog breeders bible and most breeding questions are answered there. Oh, and please dont post in caps, its hard to read!

Hi, glad to hear your news. You just HAVE to get the Book of the Bitch- we should all be on commission as its recomemded by one poster or another most days! You can get it from Amazon, sometimes from vets or you can order it through a bookshop. Its published by Henston. Almost any query/worry is covered in full. Dont increase her quantity of food til 5 weeks, and dont give extra Calcium (which some vets still suggest) just make sure what she does have to eat is high quality. Take care she is not put in stressful situations. If she starts getting cranky with her companion, seperate them. Good luck.

its taken me a while to get back in touch with everyone but there was an upset. sophie absorbed the pups back into herself after i was unexpectedly called away for three days when she was about four and a half weeks pregnant . the vet said the most likely cause was stress being that shes a mummys girl. we all expected her to have a change in her seasons but shes just come into season after losing the pups ten weeks ago the vet has checked her over and scanned her to make sure everythings as it should be and alls well. when she lost the pups i spent a small fortune on conditioning foods supplements treats and love and attention after all this the vet has said you would never know she was even pregnant as shes in tip top condition and ready to try again although i was dubious at first about trying so soon apparently her mother did exactly the same and produced 5 healthy pups and the vet has reasurred me its ok so fingers crossed all goes well but one thing for sure where i go she goes!!
