Hi, I'm wondering if any of you have had this kind of problem before and if so what did you do about it.
My 11mth male Westie has started acting really stroppy with other larger dogs when out walking with Daisy (Scottish Terrier). Today we went to the beach and he was fine playing and running around with Daisy and a group of other (small) dogs. Further along we met a larger dog and he began chasing it and growling and sounding really aggressive. He did this with a couple of other larger dogs along the way resulting in him being put on the lead when other dogs got closer. As we were loading them into the car to come home a couple with 3 dogs came along and Buddy jumped out of the car just as i was trying to fasten him in. He made a bee line for the dogs completly ignoring my call to 'come back' (recall is an ongoing problem that i'm struggling with) my heart was in my mouth but he just started playing with them and everything was really friendly. Do you think he see's the larger dogs as an imediate threat so gets in there first. I've read that Westie's act like a large dog in a small body. It's a worry though as i'm scared he'll get hurt one of these days.

Hi Budmag,
I had recall and everything else problems, which I have now solved, can you tell me what kind of training classes you have been to if any?

No training classes just trying to do it on my own with the help of advice from books and other dog owners. Buddy is good at everything eles but recall is my biggest worry. He comes to me when called when were om our own or with Daisy (brothers dog) but once he gets playing with others he loses it. I've tried calling him while walking quickly away, treats on his eventual return, clickers, whistles, showing him my displeasure, you name it i've tried every bit of advice i've been given.
