Hi,

I have a family with 3 young children and we are looking for a purely domestic pet but a dog which is a) good with children and b) a good guard dog. My wife and I both grew up with dogs but this will be ourfirst family dog. We both fell in love with the mastiff breed 'on paper' and are aware of the pros and cons of the breed but we have not actually met any in real life! so we really need to meet some and would appreciate any advice you may offer. The only reservation we have is the 'slobber-factor' we have heard that there are american and/or anatolian breeds of mastiff that do not suffer this to the same degree. We have seen pictures on the internet but have found no knowledge of these breeds in th e u.k. Any ideas?

If there's no hurry, why not visit Discover Dogs at Crufts at the NEC, Birmingham 6,7,8,9 March, where you will be able to meet all sorts of dogs and talk about the practicalities of the various breeds?
