Hi everyone,
What would I do without this site!?
I have a couple more questions about my pup. He's due to go out for his first walk this week and I wanted to ask everyone's advice about "meeting" other dogs. Harry is a very small CKCS and the area I'll be taking him to is usually quite busy with other dogs. How do I go about checking with other dog owners politely whether their dog is friendly to other dogs/puppies. The last thing I want is for people to think I'm being rude but I feel I need to check before letting much larger dogs approach, otherwise I can see myself becoming hysterical and scooping Harry up anytime another dog comes near!
The other question is about transporting Harry in the car. At the moment because he's so small I put his bed in the back footwell and he lies in it and goes to sleep. I don't use a crate and don't know whether it's a better idea to put him in the boot (It's a Merc A-class hatchback). The only thing is he'll be miles away from me and won't be able to see out (sounds daft doesn't it!). Any suggestions?
Oh and one final and very very stupid question. Are you allowed to take dogs to Crufts that aren't participating in the competition? (I'm a natural blonde sorry!!!)
Thanks everyone

P.S One more thing, at the moment Harry sleeps in our bedroom with us and manages to go through the night only getting up to wee once. How long before he can make it through the night without weeing? There's no hurry as he's great at going on the paper, I just wondered. Thanks.

I can't help you but I am giggling here as I have often wondered if you can take a dog to Crufts if it is not participating...and I am sure we are not the only ones :)

So glad it's not just me then. I was sure I was being a complete airhead by asking the question! I just hope someone answers!!

I would get him the Argos sized Crate, as it is good value, and the right size for him. It is actually better if he cannot see out, less likely to be sick, or get into the habit of barking in the car, which is distracting.
RE meeting other dogs, the best thing is for the owner to relax as the dog will look to you for his cue as to how to react.
Try to assess owners and dogs as they come up, with time you can get very practiced at this.
Most dogs will give a small pup the "puppy licence" anyway and be relatively gentle, some will simply be over-boisterous and some may be scared. If you are very unlucky you ay meet an aggro one but it doens't happen very often if at all.
Once you get to know dogs and owners, meet up for a bit of friendly socialising for the dogs :)
If there is any upset, try to remain very calm and try not to pick him up unless you really cannot avoid it.
I'm sure others can think of more :)
Hth a bit
