my boyfriend has had a japanese akita since 98, he has a good pedigree, nikasuko + kyoshi, unfortunatly he lost contact with the breeder and never received his papers, we have since, with the help of the internet, found the breeder and contacted him, he is sending us his papers.
we are wanting to put or dog to stud and get into showing akitas, they are beautiful dogs and have the most loverble of personalities, unfortunatly we are both a bit inexperienced in this and are looking for advise, <everyone starts somewhere> i have visited numerous sites and havent yet come across any information that would help us in showing or breeding akitas, tho the sites are very informative in other aspects of the breed. we would apreciate any information anyone could give.

If you have had him since 98, I take it he is 4 or 5 years old. Young enough to be shown but too old IMO to be used at stud for the first time. Jackie

I think the dog personally is too old to start showing too at champ shows anyway, maybe he would do quite well at open show level but i don't think personally i would be throwing a 5 year old dog in at the deep end.
Has he ever been to ringcraft training? If not then i suggest you do this before showing & with akitas being such a temperamental breed make sure he is going to like strangers touching him & looking at his teeth as you wouldn't want any mishaps in a show ring with such a large breed.
As for studding him out, i think you could be hard pushed to get quality bitchs to mate to him because of his age & due to the fact that he hasn't been shown as most people with good quality bitchs would rather use a known show dog of good type, temperament & pedigree than a dog who has been sold to you as a pet.If you do put him to stud then make sure you have the hips scored & eyes checked before mating him to any would be mates.
Sorry if you take all this the wrong way but i'm just trying to give you the negative side of things as well.
