Topic Dog Boards / General / Bitch or Dog ??

We are looking to get a miniature schnauzer pup. This will be our family pet (our only dog) and will not be used for breeding, showing etc. etc.

Having done some research, we believe it would be sensible to have the pup neutered at the appropriate time.

We were thinking of getting a 'bitch', but I am now a little concerned about complications of spaying that I have recently read about, in particular that a significant proportion of bitches go on to be incontinent. I would appreciate you comments on this.

Any real thoughts on bitch vs. dog ??

Thanks
K.

I think you might find that the breed with the highest incontinence after spaying is OES followed by Dobes and Rotts.

Sometimes I just wonder how much of this is down to just pure bad luck, or just how good is your vet is at operating !!
I have heard that some bitches will become incontinent at an earlier age after being spayed. But I really do believe if you watch their weight and keep them very fit and active you can stop this from happening. The bitches I have seen that became incontinent were over weight and did not receive sufficient exercise. Dog v's Bitch ..... thats a hard one. Having owned both sexes the only difference I have found is the male not liking other males or as we call it the "Typical male THING !". I think either of them would make equally good pets. Do let us know what you choose to do.

They leak urine or faeces depending on which bit is incontinent.

Thanks for the comments - I will let you all know whether we opt for Bitch or Dog. I am going to also have a word with our local vet regarding spaying etc. and see what they recommend in terms of best timing and possible disadvantages etc.

I have read all the earlier threads on this subject and it does get a little confusion as there are so many different opinions, however this is a superb site and at least I now feel reasonably well educated in terms of dog/puppy ownership!

Thank you.
