Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / toliet training my puppy

Hi,
I wonder or should i say pray that someone can give me some sound advice.
I have a 16wk old golden retriever dog, I got him at 7weeks old and have been trying to toilet train him.
I have tried the paper but no response.
I live in a flat so have trained him to go to the balcony which i keep clean condstantly.
Unfortunatley when we are not in the room and the pup has acess to the balcony he insists on urinating on the carpet. It is not always the same place and he knows he has done wrong, I can tell this by his body language. when he does it i tell him strictly no! and send him straight out to the balcony.
How can i get him to stop doing this as i have 3 young children and my husband is increasingly getting frustrated with the subject. dont get me wrong he loves the dog as much as all of us but the idea that the dog knows better but still does it is getting him down.
PLEASE HELP ME.

Hello Jayne ...first of all , have a look [link http://www.champdogs.co.uk/cgi-bin/board/topic_show.pl?tid=14670&hilite=House%20Training#93836]HERE[/link]. The advice for House Training contained on that thread is as valid for a 17 week old pup as it is for a 17 week old.

You need to clean the area that he pees in with biological soap powder and hot water ....to try and eliminate the scent. You then need to TAKE him onto the balcony ...and stay there with him until he preforms ..then give lots and lots of praise.

Do not tell him off when he has an accident ...he doesn't *know* he is just responding to your body language :)

He is still a baby ....and you should be taking him outside every 15 minutes or after eating and drinking ...keep up with the praise when he does well and he will get the hang of it. Watch for signs that wants to go ..circling around etc

HTH

Giving him heck after the act is done all u are teaching him is not to go in front of u and he will hide and do it else where. U said u have 3 children, well pups are a lot like potty training a child it will take a good 6 months to a year. If u r unable to watch him all the time put him on lead and he goes every where u go, this helps alot for house training no chance for accidents because then he is always with u. Always take him out to go, like mentioned earlier in another post and lots of praise. He is only a baby and does not understand, remember they have to learn the human language (it would be kinda like u learning a different language), lots of patience and praise/treat which ever motivates him more, treats worked great for mine. After sleeping = potty, after eating = potty, after playing = potty, and before bed = potty. Puppy's don't start to get control over their bladder until about 3 months and can usually only hold it for 3 hrs at 3 months of age.

Gus has been brilliant in the house - we used towels instead of newspaper and he has always been great .
The problem I now have is to get him to stop using the towels and get used to going outside . :(
He will do a poo outside while on his walk ( everytime) and we give him lots of praise but i cannot for the life of me get him to do a wee outside .
Does anybody have any tips on how to progress this .
He seems to wait until he gets home . :(

Hi Lel

Willis is the same - he waits till he gets home. He's 5 months old.
I'm not worried, I think he'll do it on a walk when he's ready :)

pS - have never paper-trained my dogs, always taken them straight out... but i think i read somewhere that you move the paper/towels closer and closer to the door until they are outside? HTH :)

U can put ur paper/towles outside, take slightly damp ones so the smell is still there and remove any in the house. I have paper trained in the winter with a pup and put outside the minute the weather got nice because I noticed when it was cold house training took longer, but when the next winter came around they were fine to go out.
