Hi, my puppy had a microchip yesterday and i am a little concerned. I thought the chip was inserted in the scruff of the neck but my vet placed it halfway along his back. Does anyone know if this is normal, will it cause the dog any harm and also will it be detectable by other vets etc. I am partly concerned because my vet seemed a bit distrcacted and vague yesterday and also he scanned the puppies neck to check the chip and then said that he could not detect it because the scanner needed recharging. He also seemed to have problems locating the exact wherabouts of the chip, even though there was a lot of blood at the entry site. I am probably worrying for nothing, but would be grateful for some reassurance.

the chip usualy goes in the place at the base of the neck -sort of between the shoulder blades at the wither end!!!! any help

The chip should go between the shoulderblades - there's less chance of it getting damaged there. If it went into the scruff it could easily get broken when the pup was grabbed by the scruff.
I'm surprised that the vet couldn't locate it - why not take the pup back so he can recheck, and put your mind at rest?
PS -I gather not all countries put the chip between the shoulderblades, which makes detection on dogs from other countires very difficult sometimes - I think in some countries the chip goes into the cheek (where there's less chance of it migrating) and some into to left side of the shoulder. There seems to be little uniformity!

Thanks for replying, i have to go back to the vet as he forgot to give me worming powder, so i will get him to check that it is working. looking at where the chip was placed i think it is fairly close to his shoulder blades, so i feel happier now.

Does anyone know anything about 'migrating' chips? I had made an appointment a while ago to have our pup microchipped, then our dog training instructor mentioned that her friend's dog died because it's chip had travelled into it's brain. So I cancelled our appointment, but I hadn't heard of this before.

hi,
i do microchipping, the chips are more advanced than they used to be to reduce it migrating, i scan my dogs every now and then and they are still in the same place, if the chip has not been correctly implanted, it's possible that it could migrate, have not heard of one killing a dog, regards tina

Our pup was chipped in the back of the neck area.
I was also concerned about travelling chips before we had pup done . While at the vets I mentioned this and my vet told me that now they are "barbed" which prevents movement . He said even if one was to travel slightly when a dog is picked up , the whole body is scanned anyway for a chip - also he said there would be no harm caused whatsoever
hope this helps :)

Hi Loraine ..there have been a few threads about Microchips over the past year or so ...have a look at these threads and see what you think :

As others have said, the chip is inserted between the shoulder blades - not in the same area that a jab would be administered in case that's what's worrying you.
As advised pop in and have them scan the pup again now they've had time to recharge the scanners.
I've got two dogs chipped - 5 and 2 years ago - I occasionally get them scanned at vet visits to ensure the chips are there and readable. Neither have migrated.
