Topic Dog Boards / General / Toxic food/plants for doggies

Hi everyone,

Clearly I have no life hence my posting at this time of night!
Anyway I noticed today that my 11 week old pup Harry has started chewing on the grass in the garden and it occurred to me that I have no idea what food/plants etc are toxic to dogs. I'm sure I read somewhere that human chocolate is toxic so I'm avoiding that. Has anyone any idea where I might find a list of things that are toxic or poisonous so I know what to avoid and what not to worry about.

Thanks

Try Toxic Plants

Hope this helps

Hi Anne,

Thanks for the link but I can't access it, it says page unavailable! Would you be able to post the link in full so I can try again?

Thanks

Oh and are there any "human" foods besides chocolate that are toxic?

Thanks

If you look at my post from yesterday (Raisins dangerous) you will see that raisins and grapes are now considered dangerous, whether all dogs could be potentially affected I don't know.
I also heard somewhere that onions can be toxic, has anyone else heard that?

There was a recent post on the board about onions, which are a no-no. I checked the link in this post and I would need to uproot nearly every plant in my garden. I would like to find a list of plants that are truly dangerous, versus those that will merely give a dog an upset tummy.

I know what you mean Stacey, when I was planting out the garden I used the Royal Horticultuaral Society book which says whether the toxicity is mild, moderate or severe, which did help where the children are concerned, but as the dogs are so different from us humans in relation to what we can eat safely - eg grapes, onions and chocolate (thank god it is the dogs that are allergic to choc and not us!) - It didn't really help in that respect - for example I have a grass type plant up the side of the house by the gate, the dogs cannot resist having a good old chomp before and after walks with no ill effects, however when I pulled some of it out i ended up with a terrible rash which lasted for weeks! I think we can just be cautious, and sensible, I don't think my dogs could give up the fuchsia fruits!!
