Topic Dog Boards / General / pedigree certificates

hi, i posted a message a few weeks ago asking for advice because the breeder who i bought my westie pup from had not sent the certificates. Well, after weeks and weeks of phoning him, he said that he'd sent two sets out because they hadn't arrived for some reason (he'd had the correct address, so both times they must have got lost... apparently). This morning i got sent a flimsy little photocopied piece of paper titled pedigree generation certificate. This had the names of my pups mum, dad and grand parents etc, just the names, nothing else. Nothing with his address or nothing to say i owned him, no mention of the kennel club. Now i don't know anything about buying pedigree's but has thisman gave me all i am entitled to? If not, what can i do?I rang the KC but they asked if i had the dams number and i don't, i don't even have a proper address, just directions to the kennels. I am entirely happy with my pup and love him to bits, it's just that i can't stand the thought of letting this man get away with ripping me off, especially as i paid so much money, it's my right. If he has sent me the correct things then i'm sorry for doubting the man. Any help would be much appreciated... Thank you :)

Why not call ur breeder and ask for the dams number then the kennel club can check it out and should be able to tell u if ur puppy is reg.
When I got Junior it took about 6 months before I got his papers in the mail. But I was on the phone every months with my breeder.
There should not be a problem I don't think with ur breeder giving u the dams number.
Just my opinion, I'm sure someone will be able to help u more sorry
ttfn :)

Hi,

If the 'breeder' told you that the pup is KC registered, he should have given you an official KC registration form with the pups details, mum & dad KC info etc which you need to complete with your name and address, you send this off to the KC to register the pup in your name.

The pedigree is only a paper stating the desendants of your pup and don't necessarily contain KC information / details but it should have his (breeders) details on it and signature to say that to the best of his knowledge, the pedigree is correct.

Breeders generally give you their details incase you have to contact them if you have any issues or need some advice, this all seems a bit out of order to be honest.

If you e-mail me, I can send you copies of what I give to my pups new homes, pedigrees, KC form etc. which will give you an idea of what you should receive.

if, however, he did not state that the pup is KC registered, you would not be given a KC form. I would give him a ring and ask whether the pup is KC registered or not and maybee find out why not - although it is a little late for this as you are already attached to the pup. Some breeders don't register pups with the KC - i.e. if the bitch has been bread twice in one year or the parents are not KC registered or maybee because they don't want new owners to show / breed - not good enough reasons really but I wouldn't like to comment on that (I'll get into trouble)

I don't show my dogs and breed one, max. two litters a year based on requests and rear the pups as pets but they are all KC registered, have good pedigrees and full health checks before going to their new homes.

E-mail me if you need more info

Kathleen. Have emailed you with a copy of the current KC registration certificate that yiou should have had for a KC reg pup (both sides) also a 3 generation KC printed pedigree, which some breeders will issue rather than writing out their own. Have also sent you a Word version of a Home produced pedigree like that which any breeder with a computer might produce. You can also buy blank forms to fill in by hand.

If you have the Mothers registered name, and the date of birth of the litter the KC will be able to tell you if the litter, and ytour pup are registered. Your pup should have an individual KC registered name consisting of at least two words, and be allocated a KC reg number.

Kathleen

I have had exactly the same thing happen to me the first time I went and brought a pup with my eyes shut it makes you angry doesnt it ........................

The dogs parents had restrictions on hence they could not reegister the pups which left me with a poor excuse for a 5 generation pedigree and no Kc forms.....still I love him to bits and would never be rid of him

<<<If he has sent me the correct things then i'm sorry for doubting the man.>>>

Sounds like he's just got one of those 'do it yourself' pedigrees from the pet shop and filled it in himself, then sent you a photocopy! Any fool can do that!
I'd be mad and I wouldn't let him get away with it...not for that price!!

I'm sorry but why are these breeders not getting the paperwork ready before advertising the pups for sale. All my paperwork is complete before the new owners come to pick up their pups I've never had to post kc papers or certificates on to people after and if I can do it so can they.Or is it a case of they have so many pups that they are falling behind with the paperwork....In which case...What sort of breeders are thay??Sorry if I'm wrong!!!

That is terrible -
the pedigree is pointless really if he isnt kc registered . Pedigree and KC registration are two different things .
Did you buy the pup to breed from or to show ? This is where you will definately need your kc registration papers . I would try to take this as far as possible . Seek advice from the Citizens advice because if he sold you the pup and stated he was kc registered then he has clearly lied . Do you have the advert or anything in writing where the breeder advertised him as kc registered for proof ?

When I got Bailey I had to have the KC reg posted on as although the breeder had applying four weeks previously the certificates had got lost in the post on the way to him. So he had to wait for duplicates. I know it was the truth cos I phoned the Kennel Club to check - I didn't want to take something like that on trust.

This doesnt seem to be the case though with this breeder ( being lost in the post etc) as surely the KC would be able to give some information on the litter with the breeders name etc or the dogs name.
Can you not go in KC website and put in the name of the pups parents etc and get info that way ?
If you find out the parents are not registered - then pup cant be either . Have you contacted this man again and asked when he sent off for the reg ? Tell him you have been onto the KC and see how he reacts .

I very rarely have the KC Registration through before my pups go to their new homes.

The reason being is that I like to give myself as long as possible to decide on whether there is a potential show prospect in the litter. I have a list of names that I would use for a show puppy and wouldn't want to waste one of those names on a pup going to a pet home.

I normally send the papers off to the KC when the pups are 7/8 weeks and usually now get them back within 2 weeks.

This is covered in my puppy contract, which I sign, so the new owners would have a come back on me if I did not send those papers on to them.
