Hi, I have a 12 week old Chocolate Labrador puppy (Toby) and am in the middle of getting him used to a lead. Twice a day for about 5mins i will take him out into the garden to try and get used to it but all he does is sits there and scratches at it. Is this usual as he is not use to wearing the collar?. Does anyone have any tips to try and get him to walk with the lead on?

Many thanks

Hello,

we're matching! my twelve week chocolate lab puppy (Beau) didn't like trying to be trained in the garden or the house with the collar or lead! So a pal suggested I just stick it on him and leave it there and eventually he'll get fed up of scratching at it! this seemed a little cruel to my fur ball so instead as he's had his second vaccine I just decided to take him out for a walk. At first in my arms! then a few days later I let him on the ground. the result has been (since Saturday) that he couldn't care less about his collar or lead and is more interested in exploring the big wide world. Occasionally he sits and scratches, but then I just call him to come and pretend to move my feet as thou to run and he gives chase!

give it a go. Toby sounds like a typical pup!

co-incidence, but Toby was the second choice name for my Choc lab! Freaky!

good luck!

Francy, thanks for your advice, I will give it a go as he is aloud out in public from this Friday. As Beau sounds very similar, perhaps you may also have experienced this....

I have only just found this website today which is great and have take a look at some of the topics which are very interesting. What I was interested in knowing was that Toby when in the garden seems to be attracted to any cats poo that seems to be around. We have a cat and also sometimes have other cats in the garden. Every time he goes to eat it I direct him away from it and take him over to another part of the garden but a few seconds later, he runs back over to find some more.

I will get rid of any i find asap but i wondered if this is not good for him too eat or why he is so attracted to it?.
