Has anyone owned a bitch with a stricture inside the vulva? If this occurs how is it treated if at all? And would you still be able to breed from the bitch?

I know someone who had a bitch with a stricture and as it would need surgery she reluctantly decided not to breed from her.
About a week ago the bitch had a surprise litter (no mating had been seen and there was no evidence the bitch was carrying a litter!!) It was a huge surprise to everyone but the bitch is doing very well and whelped by herself without any trouble until the last pup was transverse so she needed a c-section.
I'll let her know that you're looking for some more info and ask her to contact you if that's ok?

Thanks Fiona,
Any help would be wonderful! I'm feeling alittle desperate. This will be my Jasmines first litter and both her and the stud are very keen but something is going wrong!!!! I'm sure its not him as he is very experienced. My vet isn't interested, he just put it in a nice way.
Hope to hear from you soon Debbie
Hi Jewel, I was told this by an experienced breeder so don`t know if it`s right or wrong. Their bitch was taken to the vet who snipped *it* & she was mated a few days later. It didn`t appear to be a big deal!

try another vet... I've recently changed vets due to his arrogance and condescending manner - my new vet is great and i can pop in anytime just for advice

I have read in my vet book that it is a minor surgical procedure. Which is why I rang the vet but, he just said to wait till the end of her season then he'll see her!! I've tried to explain that the stud is getting on in years and I really am desperate to use him. I suppose its at time like this that you really find out if your vet is any good. Unfortunately I'm not really that spoilt for choice is all the vets in my area are pretty useless for anything other then routine vaccinations etc And I don't know of any that agree with people that would like to breed.
Sorry I'll quit winging I'm just having a bad day!!!

winge all you like...vets in our area sound the same as yours - not helpful with breeders... then a new Vets4Pets opened - a young guy - absolutely brilliant and up to date on things - doesnt call you in every 2 weeks for a check up like my last one did... and is happier to give advice rather than charge for a consultation... cant you just phone a few vets for advice and see what they say before you write them off??? esp as you need this sorted asap

Hi Jewel. if you know anyone here who lives near you maybe they could give you info for a vet?? Failing that get back to your vet & tell him you would like the stricture dealt with asap as you know it`s a minor procedure & as his fee paying client you expect him to deal with it.

I dont know about the last comment... maybe the vet only dealt with strictures in a text book and doesnt really know what to do hence why he seems so apprehensive...i wouldnt want him to touch my dog if that were the case.... i
Agree Emily! But I think Jewel said it could be he doesn`t want her to breed & thats really not his decision.

By the way Debbie, have you examined her yourself to see if you can feel if it is a stricture?

I would be interested in this subject too, as have heard of a coupole of bitches in my breed with this problem. One had the stricture removed, the other had difficulty being mated, but on next occasion was mated successfully and produced a good sized litter.
It would seem the main problem is getting the bitch mated, as it probably requires a bit more work to achieve a mating.

Its better then good, I'm delighted!!!!!
Well a couple of days before my planned mating my friend said "you have examined her for a stricture?" A what???? I replied. Then I had it all spelt out for me,all over the phone by the way, so I went & checked her, I panicked & said yes she`s got one & flew off to the vet. Vet done an exam & said " Christine shes fine, are you sure you checked the right place???? I was mortified & so embarassed. He also said he thought she`d gone over so more panic & the mating was done over the phone cos it was my first time mating on my own & the 2 dogs were maidens. Don`t know what anyone would have thought if they were listening in to those phone calls :) :) :) Can laugh now tho!!

"The mating was done over the phone"?????!!!!!
My mind boggles - but it would save on the petrol costs of having to travel to the stud! Was it done at peak time, or after 6pm (cheap rate)?
LOL@ J/Genie, wish it was at peak time!! Mind you it may have been cheaper to drive over & have a chat than the phone bill :)

Well that is better than me Christmas week trying to mate two maidens, Champion bitch of 3, and and a 4 year old male.
She was very OTT constantly doing a very good imitation of a proficient Stud, and he was the perfect gentleman courting her gently!!!
I had to restrain her on the lead for him to have a chance, which made him shy of trying. When he finally got the hang of what to do, she kept throwing him out, and he ended watering the grass.
By the time he had enough of her playing around and got more determined and masterful, she had gone over!!!
How I wished I had a plastic baggie, and a Turkey baster!
Tongue in cheek for international readers as our KC won't allow AI breedings of UK resident dogs. It will only allow AI on prior approval, if you are importing semen from abroad to bring in new lines, and only if it is confirmed that the donor is siring litters naturally.
I am going to try again next season.
Oh what a blow B/less! Better luck next time, the things we do eh :) Were you on your own? I had hubby helping???? & it`s unrepeatabe to tell you what he was saying at the time, but I had sat down & sent him in to get a ciggy & all of a sudden they were romeo & juliette & we had a tie before he came back out with my fag!
Christine, Spain.

Yes unfortunately I was alone, and the boy was a bit shy at first with my attempts at helping (trying to keep bitch steady), but got used to it eventually. Really needed someone to discreetky have kept him in place! :D
I am hoping that next time he will perform with more confidence, and that the girl (who will be over 3 1/2 by then) will be a bit calmer ;D and stop being as keen on the role reversal game!!!

.... you haven't been leaving feminist newspapers in her crate/kennel have you - are you sure she can't read the women's pages about girls on top:-) :-)?......

As I have all bitches we get a lot of mounting behaviour when the two youngest ones are in season. the oldest spayed bitch doesn't get involved, but Grandma is very fruity as are the two young bitches!!! :D
This is interesting. Can someone please explain what a stricture is :-)
Thanks.
Hi Claire, it was bad enough having it explained to me over the phone, so don`t think I could manage it over the net!! :) :) One of the other more experienced can do it, sorry!!

A maiden bitch I had was taken 3 hrs away to be mated when the lady who handles the stud dog asked have a 'checked her' mmmmmmmmmmm
NO so out come the vaseline and she 'checked her' and said 'oh she has a stricture' after a little wiggling{the bitch was in heaven I may add} she said 'OK thats that sorted out' the dog then mated her and 9 weeks later she produced 7 little golden bundles.
I thought a stricture was the dog equivalent to a hymen !!!!!!
Oh yes Emma, I forgot about the vaseline!!!! :) :) :)
