Hi Diane

Our oldest has this, we didn't want to go through tests etc so the vet suggested glycerine (chemists/Supermarkets etc). It soaks in better than most creams which tend to create a barrier :D Hope this makes sense

I have tried vasaline, sudocream, and the vet gave me fuciderm, all of which he licked off, he is like a dog possessed when you put cream on his nose he has to get it off, and that means all of it so it is a waste of time putting it on.

Hiya
have you tried something like E45 or that hand cream nuetrogena ?-something that will soak in and get some moisture back in rather than sit on the top ,Cocoa butter ? (or does that constitute as chocolate ? )
Liz :)

Zinc deficiency is a possibility

Hi MP, what about piercing a Vit E (wheatgerm) capsule & rub that on it. I know they can lick it off, but I asked the vet how long does it have to stay on before it becomes effective(it was cream for ringworm) & was told about 5mins or so. If you could just keep him from licking it off for a while it might work.

Hi

Thanks for all the suggestions, the trouble is i dont really want to put anything else on his nose as i said before it doesnt stay on long enough to do any good, so if anybody knows what causes a dry nose, what they may be lacking internally, then please let me know so i can try it, i have looked on various sites with not much info available as to what causes it so i am still looking for the answer, before his poor nose withers up and drops off:D

HI, I'd give the glycerine a try. Maybe add a drop of bitter aloes to stop the licking?
- By Sarah Date 08.01.03 20:14 UTC
Do try the glycerine as it will start to sink in immediately :-)

If all those superficial skin treatments have failed, your vet may have to consider other causes, for example, discoid lupus.
"Discoid lupus is an immune mediated skin disease that is probably related to systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) but instead of affecting the whole body as SLE does, it primarily affects the nose and face. As far as I know, there is no known cause of this problem but it does seem more frequent in dogs of the German shepherd, collie, Brittany spaniel. Shetland sheepdog, Siberian husky and German shorthaired pointer breeds."

Very interesting, thanks for that i think i will try and increase his vitamin e intake and see what happens.

Hi MP, don`t forget you can also pierce the Vit E capsule & use it directly on the nose as well. I`ve also heard good reports about aloe vera gel being used, heres a link about it.

Hope it gets better soon.
