my 7 month old cav has just came into season, is there anything i can get from the vets to stop other dogs sniffing around her. Any advice would be great as this is my first pup who has had a season.
thanks

Hi Guest
I tried everything with my bitch - including the sprays from the vet/pet shop. Nothing worked, certainly at the height of her season anyway. I never bothered wasting my money again, I just put up with it. At least you can get her spayed after this one :)

I have found that Sherleys deodorant tablets (Chlorophyl), is effective in allowing me to continue to take my bitches for walks, without picking up followers (road walking only, not the park of course!).
You may be able to get Chlorophyl tabs from the chemist, as I understand they are used in colostomy bags to neutralise odour.

You can buy chlorophyl tabets from health food shops as they are also used as breath fresheners,Gillian

My Aussie bitch is 8 months and hasn't had her first season yet. We walk in fields near home, there are often few/no dogs around and we know most of them. I am reluctant to keep her at home for the entire 3 weeks or so. She is very energetic and used to free running 3/4 time a day. What would you recommend me to do with her when she starts her season ? Should I keep her on a flexi-lead for all/part of this time ? Keep her at home for the part when she is most at risk ? Will keeping her on a flexi-lead stop males getting at her ? Our older dog is neutered.
Sorry for what may be obvious questions :) but haven't had a bitch before. (Will be getting her speyed as we have open fields next/behind us and can't guarantee that other dogs won't get in the garden)

Hello Daisy!
I think I would definitely keep her on an extending lead when you walk her - it won't keep the other dogs away, but you will be able to control her and that way chase any other dog away. Mind you, being an Aussie, she might not be so much of a floosy as our labs have been - talk about Flirty Gerties! Loki was absolutely SHOCKED and HORRIFIED when she was actually mated - she couldn't believe that her friend Syd would do such a thing - she thought it was all just romance and licking ears!!! :0)
We've always walked bitches on heat first thing in the morning and last thing at night.
Remember - as she is an Aussies, she could keep you waiting for her coming into season as well!!!

Thank you very much for the advice. Hoping that the onset of hormones won't affect her too much as she is a real sweetie at the moment :) But prepared either way :)
