I am about to move house and the first thing I need to do is put up a secure fence in the rather large garden that we have. As my new house is fairly close to a railway line I am thinking of a 5 or 6ft fence but would appreciate any other ideas that would provide security for my 2 weims. First and foremost is their safety but I don't want a great big fence surrounding me making my neighbours think I'm not sociable ;-) Ha they'll soon change their minds when the parties start :p

Thank You!

I put up standard sheep wire fencing with 2 strands of barbed on top.
This is still jumpable though, so add a string of electric tape, with small elec. fencer for extra security

I use 8' chestnut posts with two layers of 3'6" rabbit netting all the way around the garden. Have also had to add straining wire around the bottom, as when it got too high to jump they started trying to get underneath :-(

This is not too unsightly and hopefully by the time it has rotted I will have saved up enough to some 6' or 7' chainlink.

Hi Claire, Try a 5ft fence with a 2ft trellis on top, this should stop your weims from being able to jump it and you can still see neighbours thru trellis, youcould also grow plants up it! Bye for now

Plants and weims that sounds fun!! can't say we have any plants well not unless you count weeds because they never seem to touch the free version still it sounds a nice thought. we also have 5 foot fencing as Cheers is a very good jumper even from a standstill he can clear 4 foot easily but the 5 foot is working at the moment (holding my breath and touching wood!) but I'm getting very handy with a bit of wood and that hammer thinging now. I think it depend where you leave the garden and whether he wants to jump out and then if he can do Cheers is the only one that ever does this all the other were happy to stay behind a 3 to 4 foot fence> good luck!

Rach, I only have plants in the bit of the garden where the dogs dont go, but you neer know claire might have a good weim that doesnt eat plants??? (Is there such a thing?). Anyway it was just a thought about the plants.... Good Luck Lynn

I have a end/corner of road house and am lucky to have a wall 6'6'' to the
road side and wall at the bottom. Between my neighbour and my house is
a 5' wooden panel with a 2' trellis on top. Fortunately no cats come into
our garden.

HI

I don't know how concerned you are about your Weims jumping out, but I feel that some dogs can jump amazingly high if powered by adrenalin, scared etc. when I worked at a kennels a BC got out over a 6ft fence easily.

I think I would go for jackal fencing, which is say 6ft fencing (of whatever type you fancy) and then put say 18inches or 2 ft of fencing, at a 45 degree angle to this on top.

This is very difficult for any dog to get out of, as it has to go not only up but also out and over.

I lived backing onto a railway line for 13 years, (but it was the washing sheds rather than th efast line) and we had one good 6 ft fence, but I knew the dogs wouldnt' go anywhere as they alwasy wanted to be with me rather than out searching the horizon as it were!!!
Good luck with whatever you decide
