You must be very distressed. Did you actually see any of the babies' tummies clearly as they were born? Sometimes puppies are born with the intestines on the outside and then the bitch can't differenciate between afterbirth and guts and so eats everything, disembowelling the puppy by mistake. Usually only some (if any) puppies in a litter are affected like this but it could be that every puppy had their guts on the outside. Or it could be that she was just too enthusiastic with the cord and did eat healthy puppies by mistake. Unless you saw the newborns clearly it will be impossible to say now. Do you have any live puppies? I do feel for you you must be so upset. If she has no live puppies you will need help from the vet to dry up her milk or she may get mastitis. I wouldn't attempt breeding from her again. If you post again please dont do it in capitals its hard to read.

Its possible that she just got carried away breaking the cord & licked too much. its also possible that the pup wasn't normal in the 1st place & either had its stomach born outside or no skin covering stomach so when she licked it just disintegrated. Either way, don't be cross with your bitch, she is very mentally fragile at whelping time & will not understand she has done wrong....just look after the rest of the pups & help her be a good mum.

If ur bitch felt stressed or uncomfotable at all during her pregnancy or whelping this can cause her to cannibalise her pups. Some will eat them when they are born or wait a couple of days, since she has done this I would not breed from her because she would more then likely do it again.

I have also heard of bitches when they are cutting the cord may pull to hard and pull it out which pulls apart the tummy, more common with the undershot jaw (the brach breeds). She could of been doing this. What breed is she and how old, are there any live pups at all?
ttfn :)

As you only mention one pup, and didn't mention being worried about the others, I suspect that this pup was born with it's insides hanging out, and she just cleaned it all up. The pup would have died anyway.

If she is showing good maternal behaviour to the others I doubt she caused the pups death.

If you breed from her again take special note of her behaviour toward the newborn pups, and stay with her until they are all born, from start to finish.

Another reason, usually some time after pups are born, that can cuse a bitch to kill her pups, is Eclampsia, where the bitch's body becomes depleted of Calcium. this can cause the bitch's death,a nd a special liquid Calcium has to be given throughout lactation.

I know of a bitch that when she was whelping she was over enthusiastic with nibberling at the cord and she did just carry on eating it, we got the pup from her but it was to late to actually save it, and it was taken down the vets to be pts, it was such a shame it was a lovely male gsd pup perfectly normal, she was only left for a few minutes, it was very upsetting.
