I am Reading The Pet Owners Guide To Cocker Spaniels By Frank Kane and inside he mentions a feeding bowl specifically designed for spaniels to prevent them from dangling their ears in the food or water.
He describes these as being high sided narrow topped bowls and says they are very usefull, I just bought the heavy porcelin (sp) bowls with DOG on the front as they are heavy and I thought they wouldn't be flung around as easily :D , however :D I am now thinking of getting some of these bowls as they sound good...any thoughts on them and where to get them??
Obviously I have to find my pup first however I like to be prepared :D

I think most pet shops sell them ....if you ask for Spaniel bowls and describe them you shouldn't have a problem getting them ..our tiny local pet shop has them
:)

really?? well they didn't have anything like them in the pet shop up the road, or maybe I wasn't looking hard enough....will try again, and that is a huge pet shop...will keep trying, but are they any good??? sound very clever things if they work as they are supposed to...:D

You will have to wait for some spaniel folks to turn up to answer that ..I have Malamute who eats anything and everything no matter what you put it in :D

:D awwww

Spaniel bowls are usually made out of steel, and as you say are high sided with a small opening - it stops the spaniel's ears getting into the food and getting dirty. If food is left on the ears it can cause a lot of discomfort, especially when grooming, and this is why many spaniels will snap when being groomed - they've learnt it hurts! So I would get one of these bowls if you can.

They come in stainless steel., I have got 2 water bowls as feeding bowls and they are great, about 8inch sides, so when they are eating, their ears are clear of the food. I also have 2 plastic water bowls with high sides, which i used for shows etc.
The feeding bowls are quite hard to find (well in Jersey anyway), so i just use the high water bowls which do the trick.
I think shops like Countrymun do them, and if you do a google search for high sided dog bowls, im sure something will come up.
Anymore developments since yesterday !!!!!????? :D

Well i use a sock, i cut the bottom off it, put it over her head elastic bit first and tuck her ears into it, might sound mad but it works a treat.

Its part of the fun owning a cocker spaniel, having draped there ears in the water bowl, dragging them along the floor and then shaking them all over you, oh you have such joys to look forward to :D

I have only owned Buffy for the last year, she was rehomed to me as the previous people could not cope with her mad ways, but i learnt how to trim her eventually as there is so much to trim, and i did have the help of her breeders, i also show her and recently gained a 4th place ( first rossette from a champ show ) lka, she is a blue roan, and i do love her to bits but there are days when she drives me mad :D, enjoy your new doggie

Hi Lynsey,
we have eight cockers and never used cs bowls they are usually clever enough to keep their ears out of the water, but if they dont it shouldn`t get in their ears anyway.
Bankside

The food doesn't get "in the ears" it gets stuck to the hair on the earflaps, dries and gets stiff, and then you have the devil of a job to remove it - I know some cockers who have to have a general anaesthetic to have their earflaps cleaned! These bowls were designed because this is such a common problem with cockers! I'm glad yours are fine though.

Hello Clive
Nice to see you on Champdogs :-) You are lucky indeed that your Cockers don't get their ears in the water or their food - maybe you feed a dry food? Lots of pet Cocker owners like to feed wet/tinned food & believe me it aint no fun trying to groom a pet Cocker whose ears are encrusted with months old Pedigree Chum :D

I have four American Cockers but I've never used spaniel bowls. My lot wear snoods to keep their ears out of their food and water.

Hi Lynsey
I have a CKCS pup and I use high sided bowls so food etc doesn't get caught in the end of his ears. I got mine from Harrods (I just happened to be there when I saw it) but I've seen them in my local Pets at Home too. Personally I think they're great as my previous CKCS used one aswell and had no problems with ears dangling in food/water.
Hope you find a pup soon!
