As some of you will have read before Christmas my labrador Brooke was ill with supposed gastro enteritis.
In October Brooke whelped 7 healthy puppies with little problem. She was not a great mum, probably because she is a great favourite and very spoilt. When the pups were about 5 weeks Brooke had lost 6 kgs in weight. The vet said she had seen this once before and put it down to stress and not really liking the pups. I was advised to give her 4 weeks after the pups left and if she didn't start to put the weight back on to take her back for tests. The pups left the first week of December, except for River who we kept.
About a week later Brooke had very bad sickness and was diagnosed with gastro enteritis. At the end of that week she was hospitalised and put on a drip. Two days later she came home and was well. Within about 72 hrs Brooke had diahorrea (sp?), we went back to the vets and had more injections. She recovered. About 5 days later she was being sick again and was given an anti-vomit injection and antibiotics. The vet thought this was just the tail end of the gastro enteritis.
On christmas day Brooke was sick again, I gave her some anti-vomiting tablets I had and she seemed to recover. 24 hrs later she was being sick again despite food being withheld. Yesterday we went back to the vets and she was given 4 days course of tablets to try and hit this illness on the head. On Monday the vet proposes to do an x-ray of her stomach if she is still ill and if that shows nothing then to feed her something (forgot the name) and x-ray at different intervals to see what is happening. Since Christmas day I haven't been able to get out of my head that this could be something really bad.
Brooke has been extremely lively and mad thoughout all of this illness and doesn't appear ill, which makes it all the harder. She is nearly 3 yrs old and has never been ill except for kennel cough in the past. Despite being ill she has started to put the weight back on that she lost whilst with the pups.
Now I just want Monday to be over. Has anyone experienced an illness like this in their dogs and do you think I might be worrying over nothing. River (Brooke's pup) and Beth (Brooke's mother) have had the same illness (sickness) but only over 48 hrs and it has cleared up.

Hi Nicola, has your vet considered Giardia infection? This is cured by a seven day course of Panacur, worth mentioning I think.
