Is the wire from the sound card to the CD plugged in? You will need to open the case to see this.

And if I did where would I find it??Or is it easier to trace backwards hoping that any wire attached to the CD is infact attached to the sound card at the other end.Sorry not computer literate ...purely self taught so haven't got a clue.

Dunno whether or not this works on PCs (I have a Mac). There may be a function called "System Profiler" on your "Start" menu?? If not there, try using Explorer to look for it.

IF you have the function, it ought to tell you what devices are installed, and to what they are connected.

As I say, Macs have this, unsure about PCs. There is an adage amongst Mac users that "A PC is a Mac for an idiot" :D so they may have left it out of Windows :D

Mac's are so different I'd be supprised if what works on one works on the other.

You can't see the wire from the outside, you need to remove the case. there should be a thin wire leading from the sound card to the CD. If this is missing then no sound will come from headphones when plugged into the CD although sound will come from the speakers in the normal way. If you are not into crawling about inside PC's then it may be better take it to someone who repairs them. The job is only a minor thing but if you don't know where it goes then . . . . .
