Does anyone have any nice vets that they go to?
I for one just love mine. She has never done me or my dogs/animals wrong. She has always helped as much as she can and then some. I recomend all my friends and new pup owners to her. I have even had some people that have their own vets when they come to get their pups and now they go to my vet.
I guess what I'm saying is I only hears about the bad vets on here, I feel so sorry for people that have to deal with vets like that. Is their anybody that has a good doctor for their dogs?

ah yes, but there is a difference between a NICE vet and a GOOD vet...they are not neccessarily the same thing! I am lucky that mine is both, but I know some delightful charming vets that I wouldn't let treat my worst enemy, they are so usesless and some who are obnoxious characters but in whom I would trust 101% as a vet!

Know exactly what you mean Sam, I would recommend the practise I use to anyone, they are brilliant & don't charge the earth either & for people who don't have the money they allow payment by installments at no extra charge. One of the partners is not the most sociable person, but he goes that extra mile to help an animal and really knows his stuff, I trust them both totally, they are always prepared to discuss things with you. Ingrid
We LOVE our vets. Both dogs DRAG me in there, and if I ever have to go in to pick up something and they are in the car they have fits that I don't take them in LOL.
We feel extremely lucky with the practice we have found. I would highly recommend it to ANYONE in the Poole, Dorset area - so if anyone wants to know feel free to get in touch.
They always have time to listen - they don't patronize. They spent ages trying to track down a problem with Chelsea last Christmas. Always keep you informed of what they're doing and what they're thinking and why. The techs are great too. Overall on a scale of 1-10 I rate them at least a 15. No exaggeration.

my vet is nice and very good, guess I should state that sorry. I would trust her with all my animals. She has patience, very loyal and doesn't beat around the bush, she is very straight and upfront with everything, which I like.

This thread is particularly well timed for me.
This morning I received a Recorded Delivery letter from our vets (husband and wife team) telling me to select another practice as they felt that 'the basis of trust and communication needed for a professional relationship no longer exists between this practice and yourselves'.
This has come about solely because I dared to express my doubts about the use of Rimadyl on my young dog. I had done quite a bit of research about this drug and was very concerned about the potential side effects, some of which are very serious. When expressing these doubts, I did so courteously and respectfully and was extremely surprised at the reaction I received from the (wife) vet. She launched into a real lecture, accusing me of listening more to the writings of the dog world than the objective assessments of the scientific world.
She completely disregarded my concerns and seemed to conveniently 'forget' that my previous dog died after being given incorrect treatment at her practice.
Anyway I now have no choice but to find another local vet - not something I am looking forward to doing as there is not a huge choice in this area. I would be very interested to hear any views as to how I should approach this - questions to ask etc.

I took Phil and one of her babies to the vet today as mum had trodden on her (baby that is not Phil!) and the vet was going to use Rimadyl, however while he was out sorting the injection Phil decided she wanted to ask whether it was OK as it is believed to have an affect on collie type dogs. The vet had already read up the literature and had changed his mind about using Rimadyl and was going to use Metacam instead but only after discussing it with Phil! It was decided that although the pup had pain upon manipulation to leave it and wait and see. If there were still problems then to bring pup back for an x-ray.
Joyce I think your vet has done you a favour! Find a better one by asking other pet owners for their vets details. Before registering with any practice ask them some pertinant questions and see how they treat you!
All the best

Joyce,
I see you are in north east Wales, in my breed, Beardies, there are many people who would query Rimydal being used. If you would like me to I will enquire on a couple of lists I am on and see if I can find out names for any vets who are more willing to listen to clients.

Poor you Joyce. I have a feeling that you put her nose out of joint because you knew as much as she did. People who are losing an argument through lack of knowledge will often get arsy. Those who are confident in their knowledge will tell you what they know and their experience of it and leave the final decision upto you, confident in the knowledge that it's your dog and your responsibility if you refuse treatment. She would never admit it for liability reasons but she probably feels guilty about your other dog too which might not help.
Sounds like you're better off out of there if you ask little old me!
Good luck.
Lady G
Yes, I agree, I think the time had come to part from my vets - I just wished I'd jumped before I was pushed but there you go ! :D
The big thing in their favour, though, was that they both had a superb way with the animals, but I now realise that, although this is a big plus, other factors have to be considered.
Anne, thank you for your offer - if you can get any recommendations from your lists I'd be really grateful. I think there is someone here on Champdogs from Connah's Quay which is fairly near where I live, but I can't remember who it is !
And Lady G. I think you've hit the nail on the head ! she obviously hadn't done her homework on the side effects of Rimadyl and resented the fact that I had :)

Luckily my vet changed to Metacam for Barney without any problems when I said I had heard things about Rimadyl and I am not always very tactful - comes out wrong :) Must have been better that time!

Sorry Gina but I think you will find the Metacam is just another form of Rimadyl. So saying I have heard of quite a few dogs taking it with no side effects so dont panic.

Hi John
I did wonder that as I thought I saw a post on here saying that at some point (after Barney's first op) but couldnt find it thru the search. As he did so well on it I carried on with it after the other ops (although I saw they still gave him rimadyl during/after the ops anyway!
We tries our best dont we :) :) :D

I have a great Vet now.
They listen to me and realise I know more about my breed than they. They are like Gold dust as before I found my present Vet I had a series of "cowboys", all thought my dogs diet terrible (but they sell an excellent one), they wanted to neuter every pup I took in and one wanted to delay doing a c-section when I knew she neded one.
Oh, and there was the one who did a c-section and left a puppy inside nearly killing my bitch and the one who wanted to operate on my puppies leg saying she would never walk again otherwise, (her leg mended by itself with cage rest and I won in the show ring with her when she was old enough).
My advice to anyone is treasure a good Vet as they are scarce!

my vets are really good But has anyone else found that some vets talk to you like your stupid or a 5 year old child i really hate that,
Have beem into vets before told them what was wrong and they have looked down there noise at me like i didnt have a clue 10mins later told me the same thing as i told them when i had walked in screeemmm.lol
my vet now is good he also takes notice of what i have to say.
sandy,
Yes, Sandy, I know what you mean. Granted these vets have trained for many years but sometimes they need to listen a bit more to owners - after all, they are the people who live with their animals day to day and often have instinctive feelings about what's wrong. A good vet should not dismiss this and should work with the owner for the welfare of the pet. I'm sorry to have to say this but I think too many vets are driven by financial gain these days.

I would be grateful for information on the vet you use in Poole. We are not that happy with ours at the moment and would like to change.
Thanks

I love my vet.:D When our last mal was very ill, he made housecalls to see her to avoid stressing her too much (we live 8 miles away) and wouldn't charge us for the call outs.
It was 2 years before we got another malamute - Chewi the Thug - and as soon as he saw us in the surgery he said how nice it was to see us with another mal!
He has always had time to discuss treatment and is reluctant to use drugs if time will work just as well. Chewi loves the surgery so much I get dragged in there.
I think I have the vet from heaven and won't change even though there are three surgeries nearer.

What about vets and cats? Does anyone evr find that they can't do enough for dogs, horses etc, but when it comes to cats half of them can't seem to be bothered, or they don't really like them? Granted, cats have the teeth and claws that are VERY scary! But I hate how I have not managed to find one vet yet thats treated my big cuddly Bear cat as important as my dogs!

Dollface, i once felt the way you do about my vet. He was the bee's knee's, good with my pets AND me.
However all that changed last year. He gave one of my guinea pigs penicillin. It killed her. He told me she had a disease that is common in rabbits, which i've since found out does not affect guineas. My whole world fell apart.
I came to realise that maybe this vet wasn't as good as i thought. He diagnosed my dachsie with wind, when in fact she had a slipped disc, easy to do if you don't know what you're talking about.
Anyway i've ended up driving for 4 hours to get my guineas to a specialist in Cambridgeshire, (wouldn't like to do that regularly).
And a year down the line i'm still trying to find a vet who knows what he/she are talking about.

Snoopy,
Very sorry to hear.
My vet I do have no complaints with. One thing I know about her is that she is more concerned about the animal then the pay. There are many times I have called and explained something and she would let me know if it was worth coming in, where other vets would tell me to come down as they can't tell me anything over the phone. She also put a friends kitten down no charge and was the only one that looked at the poor little thing well 3 others could not be bothered they just walked by (no appointment we just came in to buy formula). The kitten had a real bad cleft pallet and she looked at the kitten and told us that bottle feeding the poor little one would just prolong the suffering (we would more then likely drown her, or she would starve to death). That was the first time I met her and decided to go to her. She was the only vet I had that took the time and never rushed us and doesn't seem to mind all my calls. She has even called me after hours to see what was up. when taz went in to have some lumps looked at she even let me see under the microscope and explained everything to me, it just turned out to be fatty cells.
I agree not all vets are good, but I do like mine and my animals love her.Thats the main thing.
ttfn :)
