Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / Puppy eating own poo
- By dennett90 [gb] Date 20.12.02 20:45 UTC
Our 10 week old flat coat has started to eat her own poo. Its come as no surprise because our last two dogs did it to some extent. I'm surprised it's started this early though and want to stop it as soon as possible. Obviously its easy enough during the day because we clear up straight away. Night time is the issue. Has anyone tried those tablets you can get from pet-shops?? Do they or anything else work? Help please

Hiya ...if you use the SEARCH button at the top of the page and type in *EATING POO* you should get quite a lot of threads about the subject :)

Hope that helps

Yes, I've seen that - this is a bit different because its her own and at night when we're not there.

The threads brought up on search cover ALL aspects of poo eating. Does the pup sleep in a crate at night?

Sorry, I was in a rush last night - I though you meant read the recent posting that someone else had added - I'll do the search. Her breeder has suggested a crate but its really something I'm trying to resist - I do find the very large and intrusive - I've never needed one with other dogs so I'm trying to persevere without one.

All dogs should have a crate, especially large breeds. They are den animals, and they need a place that they feel safe in. Also, it keeps them from going to bathroom where they sleep.

Thanks for responding. The puppy has a place in the corner of the kitchen - its been specially made to give her sanctuary, its under a work surface, where her bedding is and box of toys. She spends all her sleeping time there and she does not soil that area (we put out newspaper by the back door at night which she uses). I think it does provide the same security as a crate.

Best wishes

try gratting a little bit of raw carrot in her meals eg half a small carrot a day,As most dogs do not like the taste of this when parst this has worked for me before,
nothink worse then a licking puppy when you no what its been doing.lol

Hi There. My balck Labrador dog used to do the same. He wasan awful dog when he was young, he would eat his poo all the time. Eventually i had to take him out in the garden with a lead on so that i was with him all the time and he could not eat poo. However, I was told that if i feed him pineapple (Strange, yes i know) that it would stop him. And it did. For a while, i had tofeed all my dogs pineapple as he thought if he couldnt eat his own poo, that he would eat everyone elses!!!!!! Now at the age of 7, he has eaten enough pineapple and done not eat pooasnymore!!!!!!

Thanks - we've tried the pineapple but it didn't work. Since we started her on 'deter' tablets from the pet shop, she hasn't eaten any. Fingers crossed!

Apparently aubergine has a similar effect to pineapple (so they say!).

I would still retrict her area at night-time to her bed, using a guard of some description. Find it unusual that she poos at night anyhow - maybe you could try feeding her last meal earlier in the evening so she has plenty of time to go out after; then maybe set your alarm a little earlier in the morning (UGG!)

Afraid flatcoats are a bit notorious for this habit, but usually grow out of it - they copy their dams when they clean up the nest. Try not to tick her off - you'll find she becomes devious (!!!) Just ignore if it happens again.

Thanks Jo.

I think we may have cracked it with 'deter' tablets - there's been plenty to clear up the last couple of mornings with no 'tell-tale signs'. Regarding restricting the bed space - I'm about to post a question regarding this and the use of a crate. If it'll help I may try one.
