Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / Border Collie Fast Eater
- By Patrice [us] Date 15.12.02 18:21 UTC
My Border Collie puppy (14 weeks old) eats so fast that she almost passes out from lack of oxygen. Several times I've had to remove her collar because the food is all backed up in her throat. Then her tummy FILLS with air and I have to rub her throat and "burp" her until she comes back to life. I pull her from her food but even when she's in the middle of a near death experience she would like to continue to snarf. I haven't a clue what to do. I've had many dogs in my life, including Borders and this is a new one to me.
Thanks.

My springer used to do this and it was recommended to me that I buy her a raised feeding bowl. It worked and when I do feed her on the floor, she goes back to gulping her food down. It worked for her so it may be worth a try.

If she is fed dry food you could try feeding her from one of those food balls (the name escapes me at the moment:D )then she would have to work to get her food out and this in turn would slow her down.Best Wishes Gillian

The usual reason for exessively fast eating in a very young puppy is a memory of competition for food with litter mates and normally once the puppy realises that it no longer has that competition the eating slows down. How many feeds are you giving at the moment? If you have cut down from the normal 4 feeds then I would suggest you go back to four for the time being. Smaller feeds more often might help.

Hi Patrice.
I agree with John, small meals on a raised surface, or in a very large bowl so the food isn't all together may well help.

If it is dry food, put it on a tray. The small amount will be spread out. Try giving her daily ration in more meals, up to six if it will slow her down
