We have no central heating at the moment, during the day we have the gas fire on, and we all sit close to it including our dog. But at bedtime it gets switched off.
Our dog is smooth coated and I don't like to see her huddled up, I don't want her
to be cold. She sleeps in a plastic bed, and in that I have put an old adults sleeping bag folded in half for extra comfort and a vet bed, I think thats what
there called, vets use them. I bought her a coat, and for several days I put it on her,for about 10 mins so she would get use to it. Last night I put it on her before we went to bed.
When we got up this morning, she had chewed it off. Has any one got any ideas
for a cold dog. Jill.

It would be helpful to know what size/breed she is. A smaller dog might be more cosy in a hooded bed, like a cat bed, or there are "novelty beds" available such as these but certainly one with raised sides to keep out any cold draughts would help.

my aunts dog has a hot water bottle...the microwavable sort stay warm for longer. would your dog chew it though?

She probably finds wearing a coat when she's sleeping uncomfortable and it could make her too warm.

Many dogs love to sleep by the fire - it doesn't necessarily mean they are cold - just softies:D. How old is your girl too?

Unless your house is literally freezing I would not think she is really cold but if you are worried or want to make her more cosy there are a couple of things you can do.

Do you have a crate - if so cover this in a blanket so that there are no drafts getting into it and her body heat creates a warmer area. If you don't have a crate then get hold of a large box - say, one that your computer moniter came in and put her plastic bed in this with the front open - I did this for some of mine last winter - they eventually demolished the boxes but they worked for a few months.

We don't have central heating and it's freezing in our house. I don't find the dogs get cold though. They do huddle round the fire when it's on but when the fire is off, they seem ok. They do have lovely thick coats though.

HI ,

We were without central heating for 10 days and i found that our 2 SBT's got very very cold, and would lie on the sofa shaking... - we solved this by giving them a single duvet... this we put over the sofa (or inthe bed) and them fold it down over them. In the morning we always find Cleo still underneath, but Solo will sort of back himself into a corner over the top of the doubled up duvet so he is partially covered. This works perfectly and has the added bonus of keeping the sofa clean! :D

We have no central heating and have not had any problem with the Dogs being cold.
