Hi all

I'm looking to get new beds for the boys and don't know what to get. I do have a large plastic bed that I put vet-bed in - but with the crate up in the kitchen due to wet muddy paws - there isn't enough room. I have used cut up quilts in the past and old blankets. I am currently using one of those doughnut type squidgy beds with the removable base, stuffed with hollofil not beads. They ripped that to shreds and the "ring" is well on it's way out.

Buddy likes to have somewhere to rest his weary head - he is such a lazy slob:D Jasper doesn't fuss much but seems to like flat quilt type beds:rolleyes:.

I just wondered what everyone else used and what resisted tugs of war Also if anyone has a recommended supplier too.

Just bought some of the smart 'Vet Bed' type bedding (blue with black paw prints) from Stock Nutrition for our pup. Didn't want to get anything that she can chew. Delivery was excellent and it is so big that I have cut it in half and they have a piece each (mine are medium sized darlings !). We haven't got a lot of room at the moment in the kitchen and it can be moved around easily.

Hi Pam,
I use old duvets, the nice washable kind, not the rubbish ones made out of that weird fibre that disintegrates when you look at it!
I have just cut up an old double duvet, folded each half in half again, and stitched up the cut sides so i can wash it. Amazingly, it has come out of the washer a)white, and b) 99% hair free! now thats what i call a miracle!!!!!!

ps, this method is really only good if you have a lot of charity shops where you live!

Emma, how did you manage to machine the two layers of duvet together. I also cut up old duvets, but my machine really struggles to get through one thickness. Last time I bought some wide bias binding and machined that onto the raw edges.

ARRRR, i forgot to mention that, I did it the old fashioned way, by hand, and yes it took a few hours (i am a rubbish sewer!) but i had no choice, as in attempting to machine it, i managed to knacker my mums most excellent, and expensive Singer.
So at the end of it, i got a b******ing from my mum, and sore fingers, and cross eyes too. Still, well worth it now i have seen how well they wash!!!!
Also, i have just found a source of nice single duvets! My mum visists an old peoples residential care home, and since a lot of them have no family, when they pass on, their stuff gets split between who needs what, and the rest goes to charity. So i now get the decent duvets!

I wouldhave thought there would be some way of doing it on a machine though, if you can set your machine to 'quilt' maybe?

Dunno, like i said, i cant cope with technology like sewing machines, btw, this isnt me typing, im dictating it to the dog!

How about machine stitching velcro onto the quilt and using that to stick the quilt together when you fold it over?

Now THAT is a good idea! cos, then the bits of hair that do get stuck in teh fold would wash out! Brilliant, what i would do for that kind of mind!
Oh well, im stuck with the one i have got now! I am gonna try that one when i have some spare time (which with a 9 week old pup, is not often!!!) Ho hum, i will buy some velcro too, i might be needing that!
Hmmmm, on reflection, i could use velcro to close the covers i make out of old duvet covers. Doggies have a habit of chewing off the plastic press studs that are on there usually!

I tell you what, even with all this brain activity, it does work out cheaper to make dog beds, the last duvet i bought new, of the washable ttype that doesnt get hairs clinging to it, cost me about £16, a couple of covers fro ma charity shop were only £2.50, and i made three dog beds out of it! in a shop, that would have set me back about £30-£50 each!

Poundstretchers or Asda are good for cheap duvets and Asda are brill for cheap duvet covers. Other idea if you use the velcro for the covers is try oddbod remnant boxes in fabric shops. We have a firm Remnant Kings which has a big curtain warehouse in Glasgow that's brill for remnants. I even was lucky enough to get 2 roll ends that were long enough for me to make floor length curtains, tiebacks and pelmet for my living room, all for 30.00 reduced from 70.00!! and my pals comment on how they look extortionate. Shows it pays to sew :)

It does indeed, I have gorgeous dark red crushed velvet curtains in my living room, they are about 7' long, and i got them from a charity shop for about £3, i had to put my own linings in them, and replace the tape at the top. Not bad for some one whose stitching is absolutly horrendous!
Hmm, i think i can feel a shopping trip coming on! Oh no!

Emma, we had very nice dark red velvet curtains in the big kitchen/sitting room window. My mother-in-law Renee gave them to us after seeing the cheapos we had before and they were probably the second best (and maybe the second most expensive?) bit of furnishing in the house. Then we had Teelin the Terror's home designer phase. Now we have one and a half very nice dark red velvet curtains :). The only time I've been glad that Renee is dead was when I saw T-t-T sitting on the other half no longer nice dark red velvet curtain chewing it :D.

I've recently become a convert to the Winna pet beds - they are duvet type, but very thick and sewn properly down the middle so the filling stays put. NIce dark tartan removeable cover. We put vet bed on top to make it extra cosy ---well, we've no central heating just now.....;)
