my yorkie is now six months and would like to know when they go through the night without wees or poohs. It is mostly wee as I make sure that she goes after eating before bed. Am i making a mistake leaving newspaper down for her.
when is it they ask to go out like barking. Ive tried taking her to the door and barking myself, but then she thinks there is something in the garden to bark at and doesn't bark until out in the garden. am i expecting too much. i haven'nt had her from the age you normally get them at, she was almost five months old and well socialised and supposidly house trained.

do they ever learn to go wee pooh on their walks. i can take mine for a good ole walk, and she comes back and poohs under table or wes where she likes.

HI, Debbie.
I had a similar problem with my Shih Tzu puppy so I sympathise!
We got him from a breeding kennel when he was 4 months old. He seemed to have it fixed in his head that outside was for playing and inside was only for poos and pees!
All I can say is crate training him did wonders - if you're interested, I can email you privately or whatever and tell you how it works. But I think the main thing is they come to realise what walks are for in their own good time! So many people told me the penny just drops one day! Make sure you keep up taking her outside at regular intervals and now I walk Mikey at set times at least 3 times a day plus a late night wee round the block! So far it seems to have worked so I'm sure it's just time and perseverance!
As for night time dryness, I think it's probably just a question of maturity. I used to take Mikey out even at 2 in the morning if I heard him moving about....exhausting but it worked!!
Good luck!! Let us know how you get on...

From the sound of your post, I think your dog is a bit confused about housetraining, could you buy/borrow a crate and after doing a search on this site start as if she was a new pup. The crate I find really helps both with asking to go out and with being clean at night. I never expected mine to do all they needed on walks as their is often too much going on for them to concentrate. I only use paper for a short time in the crate but have always got rid off it quickly as it is not used, I feel that leaving paper down gives confusing signals about where it is ok to go

Can someone please explain crate training to me? If I have a puppy that is in a crate and it needs to eliminate it will, thus, as far as I can see teaching it to "go" in its bed and necessitating a lot more washing than if it went on the floor?

I would remove all paper - I never use this to train my pups as once I have them I consider they should be going outside and paper just gives them somewhere to go inside if they are so included.

Not all dogs bark to go out, some will turn in circles, some will will stand in front of you and just stare at you and others may just go and stand behind a chair - you will need to learn to "read" your pup to see what it does before eliminating.

If I was you I would start right from the beginning again. Take (not the take, not put) her outside every half hour or so, after eating and when she wakes up) and keep murmering to yourself which ever words you are going to use to prompt her to "go", some people use busy, or wee, or puddle and as soon as she does praise gently but enthusiastically - not enough that you distract her from what she is doing but enough so that she knows you are pleased and use your chosen word frequently whilst "going".

Crate training only works if you are there to "hear" when they need to go. For my boys - I had them in a small crate by the bed. Only Jasper really needed to go out in the night Buddy was fine. I would hear Jasper wake up and start moving about the crate and whimper. I would pick him up and take him outside to do his stuff. Praise him - only gently so as not to excite then put him straight back in his crate. He was clean and dry from the off as he always went outside. He never soiled or wet his crate so I never got any extra washing:D

If you can do this the dog won't normally soil his bed. It won't work if you put them in a crate and leave them in another room where you can't hear them. After all - they can only hold for so long and for a puppy - that's not usually very long at all. In this scenario - you would be encouraging your dog to soil their bed - which would not be very pleasant for them at all, and would give you more washing:D

Hi all,

I am no expert but drate trained at least 4 puppies with fantastic results. To start with I am very disiplined myself and get up during the night and lift the pup and take it to toliet. I never leave the pup long enough that it generally needs to go when I am not around.

My boxer bitch I am proud to say never had one accident ever. Honestly she was so quick.

I would lift her run to the same spot int he garden and kep saying " Pee pee"

My 2 westies we not as quick but still were very good with the crate. My bitch never weed in her bed, my puppy dogs did on a couple occasions but very few.

I have always thought each to their own but I have tried paper and caging and would never ever go back to paper. Some of you may have mastered the paper but in my head all I can see is if the pee in the house whether on paper or not they are in the house.

Please dont get me wrong I am not saying my wayis the only way but it works for me better than the others.

BFN
