hi all
I have a 7 month old rough blue merle collie.
He is fed 3 times a days on the same food and it has been incresed accourding to his growing ...i know i have done that part right

what i cant understand is that every 3 days or so he gets the slops :(
but then as if by magic the next time he goes poo's he is fine !!!!!

Anyone any ideas what it could be ? I have bought some fresh chives last night which i am going to mix in his food as i have heard that is good for upset tummy.

I am also going to (if the chives dont work) take him to the vets for blood work.

What could this be ...it dont affect him at all he isnt withdrawn or anything when he has the slops ...im just wondering if he is frocing himself to go when he dont need to ???!!!

anyway help or ideas would be gratfuly recived :D

Hi there

I owned a sable and white RC for 12 years (he died almost 2 years ago now) and he spent the majority of his life on Hills ID prescriptive diet (available only from vets and b****y expensive - though it does last a couple of months on average) due to him having colitus (?) Sometimes his poos were so loose he even lost blood too. In general he was a very fit healthy dog to the end, but any different food at all (dog or human variety) would give him diaorhia (spelling again) big style. I suggest you do see the vet to get blood/stool samples taken. My collie could be fine for months and then just get the runs for no apparent reason - not much fun with a long haired dog!!!! Good luck and best wishes.

Hi,

You could try mixing some natural yoghurt in with his food - a spoonful a day - they seem to love it and it rebalances the bacteria in the stomach or something similarly technical.

Also, what food are you using? I had one Rough Collie who was always fed on a good quality hypoallergenic food, but occasionally had the same problem. I now feed Nutro Lamb & Rice, and have never had the problem since.

My boston had the poops from eating food with too much corn meal, switched to a lamb and rice and no problems her poo was back to normal.

I wonder if this is a common condition with rough collies. We used to have a sable and white and this was the only problem he had. We tried several different diets but finally settled on Vitalin mixed with fresh chicken !! Looking back now, I do wonder whether it was more to do with vaccine reaction than a digestive disorder. I seem to recall that his worst bouts occurred after boosters but at the time we weren't aware of possible side effects.

Hi Jojo. Rough Collies can have sensitive digestive systems. What food are you using?

well i have had him on his normal food (pedigree puppy) with calcium mixer crunch from day 1 and have never changed he was fine when we first got him for the first few months ...so i dont think it it the food .......anyway i have been putting in a fair amount of chives (fresh) chopped up each meal and i have to say ....what an improvement :D
yayayayayayayy!!!! no slops as yet and by the looks of things this has done the trick because he goes easier too now :D

bless his heart :D anyone know what it could have been ? maybe just a delicate tum and for some reason some days its a bit more delicate ???? anyway the chives are working lets hope they continue to do so and i am gonna hold off on the vet check for this unless it starts again :D
